Gabriel came back and located in Grant Co., Tn. His youngest son, Roy Bumpus, is employed in the Post Office at Logansport, Tn. Per LAB: The foregoing per CHB regarding William Calvin is not understandable for the following: 1.- If the father of William Calvin died in 1837 and his 2nd wife also died in 1837 then it would be impossible for him to have a half sister and a half brother, Gabriel and Sarah, as Gabriel was born in 1839 and Sarah was born in 1843. Therefore I can not use the date of death of William Calvin's father and step-mother as given by CHB as it can not be correct. 2.- Per ASB/JRT: Says that the father, Henderson, died prior to 1858 which is more reasonable. 8.1283 Bumpas, Dolphin - -1833 - - lod; 8.1283(7.957, 6.420, 5.206, 4.108, 3.3, 2.4, 1.1) Civil War: Dolphin b. at Winston Salem, N.C. AN ACCOUNT, THE BUMPASS FAMILY , WRITTEN BY; WILLIAM PRESSLEY BUMPASS, SR. written in 1906 There is no history of the Bumpass family that I know of, only handed down by tradition. You will consequently know what opportunity I had for learning the history of our family, which I will go on to relate, and I will state that as I believe said history to be true in all of it's main facts. I will relate it as though I know it to be true of my knowledge. I am now in my 74th year of age and when I was a boy there were many old people who could recollect many instances of the Revolution. My maternal grandfather lived until 1854 and frequently talked about the war and the page 391 page 392 g.f g.p name born died part his father took in it. There were also other people who related instances of events and also old family negroes who seemed to take as much interest in it as the whites. (The British would capture the Negroes and sell them to the West India sugar-planters.) The Bumpass family migrated from Wales and Great Britain to the Royal Colony of Virginia at a very early date; Virginia, being a Royal Colony, had a state church(The Church of England) supported by tithes collected from the people(Generally so much tobacco). As our ancestors were Baptists they were opposed to a state church. The Carolinas were not Royal Colonies and had no established church, consequently about 1725 they, our ancestors, emigrated from Virginia to North Carolina under a guaranty from the authorities that there would be no interference with civil and religious liberties. They, with many of their neighbors, got large tracts of land, or tracts of land from the British Crown for which they paid 12 1/2 cents per acre. Both of our ancestors were named John Bumpass. One got his land on Deep Creek and was called Deep Creek John. The other got us land on Tar River and was called Tar River John. These land grants were about fifty miles north of Raleigh, in Person County. Now it was on Tar River Plantation that I was born and reared, and I think I am the fourth Generation, perhaps, from the settlement in North Carolina. The first trouble the North Carolina colonists, had with the British was when the government tried to introduce the Church of England, and compel the colonel to pay tithes and support it. The colonists resented the action by arms, but were defeated at the Battle of Alamance by Governor Tryon. Whether our ancestors took an active part in this move I do not know. I merely mention this to show you that North Carolina was always jealous of its liberties, both civil and religious. In the meantime the British had opened up a military road from Richmond, Virginia to Hillsborough, North Carolina called the King's Highway, and established a court at the latter place called the Court of the King's Bench. They also kept a number of troops at Hillsborough to enforce the mandate of the court. These troops were caued the King's Lighthorse. The military road, mentioned above, passed through our plantation, which made it very hard on our ancestors after General Greene was defeated by Cornwallis at Guilford Court House, as will appear by what I will state hereafter. The first trouble between the ancestors and the British, of which I have any recollection or knowledge, is about the time of the Mecklenberg Declaration of Independence. There had been a secret meeting between the Whigs, probably at Goshen in Granville County, and some papers or resolutions drawn up. The British authorities heard of it and issued a writ against Captain Jon Bumpass and Colonel Parsons for high treason against the King, and they were arrested by the King's Lighthorse and carried to Hillsborough to be tried for high treason before the King's Bench. The British authorities learned somehow that the papers needed to convict were at Goshen and started a troop of Lighthorse to Goshen to get the papers, but Robert Bumpass, a brother of Tar River John's, beat them to Goshen and had the papers burned before the troops got there. Consequently the people accused were turned loose and the Grand Jury would not indict them(The Whigs were in favor of Independence). The Tories were loyal to the Crown or King. Tradition says that Robert Bumpass killed an imported race horse to beat the Lighthorse to Goshen. The Revolution came on sortly after that, and North Carolina furnished her quota for the regular army under Washington, and on this account, the Whigs(Patriots) were mostly in the Army. The Tories, in the absence of the soldiers got robbing the houses of the Patriots of their beds and clothing, or anything of value that they could carry away, and had fortified their positions at the Horseshoe bend of Tar River, in Cranville County. Captain Bumpass returned home with his company and defeated them(The Tories) and returned the property to it's rightful owners. This action on the Whigs made, the Tories very hostile in that section, as will appear later. Near the close of the Revolution, Lord Cornwallis invaded North Carolina with a large British Army, for that war, and defeated General Greene at the Battle of Guilford Court House. Greene retreated across the Tar River in Virginia(possibly the Dan) and his army mostly scattered, as he had no way of supplying them with rations. page 392 page 393 g.f g.p name born died Both of my ancestors fought in that battle, and Deep Creek John was taken prisoner. He refused to take the oath of allegiance to the British Crown, but Lord Cornwallis had him released saying he had rather trust him than many of those who had taken the oath, but afterwards re-arrested and chained to a cart, and was never heard of by his family after that. The weather was very cold, and it is supposed he froze to death, as there were a great many fresh graves on the line of Cornwallis' march to Hillsborough, where he made his headquarters after the battle. The British Lighthorse and the Tories raided the country and killed all the horses and cattle they could carry off, and burned and destroyed everything they could. The Patriots fled to the woods and swamps and carried their negro slaves with them. Our ancestors, living on that road, were an easy prey to them and lost everything they had except their land and negroes. The British and Tories would follow them into the woods, they were afraid of the old flintlock rifles that they carried with them, and with which they could shoot a man through the head at one hundred yards oftener than miss. These facts I learned from my Deep Creek Grandfather who died in 1854. It was my great grandfathers that fought in the Revolutionary Army. My grandfather said that when he was married his father had given him a tract of land, but the country was so destitute of everything that all the cooking utensils he could get was a piece of an old broken pot, so effectually had the British destroyed everything. When the British started to retreat to the coast, every man and boy who was large enough to carry a gun, fought them from behind every rock and bush, and that roadside had many fresh graves on it too. There was not but one Tory left in that country and the boys used to dump him in the creek every fourth of July. The only Tory left in that country was a hotel keeper in Hillsborough. I have heard his name but in the lapse of time I have forgotten it. The old Court House in which the court of the King's Bench was held, was still in Hillsborough, N.C. as late as 1857. I have seen it often. It was a one story wooden frame building and it had in time been painted red. It was in this house that Lord Cornwallis had his headquarters after the Battle of Guilford Court House. General Greene would have re-crossed the Dan and offered battle to Cornwallis if he had known his scattered forces would have flocked to his standard. The British had previously forced General Green to retreat across the Dan into Virginia. The British Army was so badly cut up at Guilford court House that Cornwallis had to retreat towards the coast and it was on the retreat the Revolutionists fought him so hard and he lost so many men. There was an incident that happened by the Battle of Guilford Court House handed down by tradition that I have never seen in print, but would like to relate. The North Carolina Militia had taken a position behind a rail fence, and when General Greene's army retreated the British charged the fence. The Militia all fled, with the exception of one old grayheaded man who kept his position and was snapping an old flint-lock rifle at a British officer. The British officer saw him and said "Don't shoot me you old fool". About that time a soldier made an attempt to bayonet the old man. The officer knocked the bayonet up and told the soldier that the old man was too brave to die. The officer had noticed that the flint had fallen out of the old mans gun and that he could not shoot. They did not arrest the old man but let him go. The muskets captured from the British were deposited in different jails throughout the state, and were used by the militia to guard the men in them to be hanged for murder. I saw them used four times for that purpose in Person Countv. Superannuated Nov. 1924. Served as pastor and presiding Elder for 54 years. EXCERPT FROM: "The Bumpass Family in America". by Robah F. Bumpas, pg. 5 and 6 of "The Bumpass Family of Person Co., N.C. by ASB/JRT. "In the early days of the American Colonies, every shipmaster was required to take a sworn statement of every immigrant. The author(Robah Bumpas) has searched the records for one hundred years after the arrival of the Mayflower Christians, 1620, and found but one Bumpas, Edward, who came in The Good Ship Fortune, Nov. 10, 1621, the next ship after the Mayflower. Edward Bumpas settled among the Mayflower people and his descendants and theirs intermarried and soon the name appears in the list of the Mayflower descendants. Within the century we find his grandchildren and great-grandchildren domiciled in North Carolina and Virginia. As early as 1660 a New England Colony was planted on the lower Cape Fear River in North Carolina. It was of brief duration but communication between Mass. and N.C. colonies was kept up by coastwise vessels as there was constant trading. In the decade 1737-1746 there was a group of N.E. families holding real estate in Onslow Co., N.C. - Job Bumpas, Jabez, George Bumpas and Thomas Bumpas, Later Jabez goes to Jones County." The Christian names brought by the immigrant from the old world have come to be considered as a family inheritance, and by these names the family might be traced. The names of the family are still carried by the families overseas. Other names are unusual and serve to identify their owners as for instance Job and Jabez. Robert, Edward, Samuel and John are repeated over and over again. Before the century closes the names of Nathan and Nathaniel come into the family in Mass. and Maine and soon in Va. and N.C. The name Robert appears in Va. in less than a century from the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, and never ceases to be used in that branch of the family, making its migration as it trails out through the south west. The name Gabriel comes in a little later and has continued on down the line, but not so frequently as Samuel, which occurs in each generation and in every branch of Edward's descendants." Robah F. Bumpass. pg. 10 of "The Bumpas Family of Person Co., N.C. by ASB/JRT." While fully convinced himself that the southern branch of the family is directly descended from Edward the Pilgrim, he was not able by documentary evidence to connect them. Mrs. Cherry presented the history of Edward the Pilgrim and page 394 page 395 g.f g.p name born died connection with the southern Branch as she and the Reverend Robah Bumpas believed it to be. ASB/JRT 1972. C.H. Bump depended greatly on the findings of the Rev. Robah Fidus Bumpass as did a number of other researchers. I(L.A.B.) have depended greatly on the findings of C.H. Bump and must say that if The Rev. Robah Fidus was incorrect in his findings I then as well as C.H. Bump are also incorrect in our findings as well as many other researchers. There is evidence in the book by ASB/JRT on pp. 13, 14, and 15 that leads me to wonder if, in fact, that Robert Bumpass of the Southern lineages was really the son of Samuel. This article was written by May Cazort McClurkin of the Cazort line of the family. Pg. 15 by ASB/JRT:-May Cazcrt McClurkin states: We have documentary proof of Richard's having come to Va. in 1635 or 36 - Ref. Cavaliers and Pioneers" by Nugent, pg.41 and 42; Early Virginia Immigrants" by Greer, pg.52; The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", Vol. 5, p. 212 by West. It seems to me that this may be possible, however, if true, then why has not a single researcher of the many, many that have performed research on the Bump, Bumpas, Bumpass, Bumpers, Bumps, Bumpus families not also found this information and picked up on the tracing of this lineage to some conclusion. I have not found a single researchers documentation other than the above mentioned that has found or mentioned a Richard ever having been found in Virginia during this time period. I choose to stay with the findings of C.H.Bump. There is much, more biog. in the book by ASB and JRT about Robah Fidus Bumpas. Much of this biog. is very enlightening and is most likely correct, however, I find a number of assuming statements and not really conclusive facts. This is what influences me to accept C.H. Bump's findings and continue from there until I or another researcher finds concrete evidence that the family lineages up to Robert of the southern lineages is in fact not as stated by C.H.Bump and a number of other persons who have performed extensive research on the various lines of the family.
