ASB/JRT; Jesse m. Mollie Clements, Granville Co., N.C. Immigrated to Tn. 1820. Raised a large family, 2 known sons, 1830 census Middle,Tn.; Jesse Bumpass, Williamson Co., Tn. Per Roland Reginald Bumpus; Not much is known about Jesse. He was surely b. in Person Co., N.C. The oldest U.S. census taken in 1790 did not list the children by name. He was the oldest child in his family and his father was b. in 1766. Jesse' oldest child was born in 1811. So, Jesse must have been born within a couple of years of 1790. It is recorded that he moved to Tn. and raised a large family. However, the names of only two of his sons are known. He first settled in Williamson Co., Tn. not far from Nashville. It is known that a great number of people left N.C. at this time going over the mountains to Tn. Many from the Bumpus family were among them. Some stayed in Tn. and many went on to Tx. This last number arrived in Tx. before the Alamo. Resided near Lassen Volcanic National Park, Ca. in Lassen Volcanic National Park, Ca. there is a Bumpass mountain and a hot spring area also known as Bumpass Devil. The mountain and the hot spring area was named for Kendall VanHook Bumpass, a cowboy and early settler in that region who is reputed to have discovered the hot springs area. The story of its discovery has been related as follows: One day while searching for strayed cattle Bumpass rode into the small valley containing the boiling pools and mud pots. Dismounting to examine the phenomena, Bumpass broke through the crust at the edge of the pool and scalded his foot. He was late returning to the cow camp and page 261 page 262 g.f g.p name born died upon being questioned as to where he had been, Bumpass is reputed to have replied,"Boys, I have been in Hell", hence the name Bumpass Hell LAB: I visited Lassen National Park(19B5) and saw Bumpass Mountain and Bumpass Hell. The mud pots and springs are quite dangerous and there are warning signs telling one to be very careful as a number of people are burned by the hot water each year. There are a lot of foul smelling fumes that are of a sulphur nature. I have much more biog. about these and other information relating to Kendall vanhook Bumpass, but too much to enter here. lod;: 7.969 Bumpass, Green Lee 9-19-1811 10-16-1903 7.969.m 11-26-1818 Carson, Margaret Julia - -1822 2-18-1863 8.1311 Bumpass, Edwin R.(m) - -1838 8-17-1920 8.1312 Bumpass, Washington Pembroke(unm) 4-24-1844 8-20-1913 8.1313 Bumpass, Yancey Clay(m) 5-5-1848 11-13-1914 8.1314 Bumpass, John Morgan(m) 10-25-1862 - - 8.1315 Bumpass, Eythunzia Arabella(m) - -1842 3-27-1928 8.1316 Bumpass, Florentine(n.f.d.) - - young 8.1317 Bumpass, Pauline(m) - - - - 8.1318 Bumpass, William(n.f.d.) - - young 8.1319 Bumpass, Nellie Lee(m) - - - - lod; 7.969(6.433, 5.209, 4.108, 3.3, 2.4, 1.1) Green was b. at Caldwell Co., Ky., d. at Puryear, Tn., m. Following is the article of Harriet Lesbia Taylor as it appeared in the Syracuse Journal, pg. 4, Friday March 27, 1925. DEATH AS FORETOLD BY MRS. BUMPUS, CLAIMS HER AT TIME PREDICTED. Eight days before Mrs. Harriette Bumpus, 60 died at her home, 514 Tallman St., last week, she forecast the exact time of her death. The story is told by Dr. Donald Parker, University Building and by her daughter, Miss Grace Bumpus of Cortland Hospital both of whom were in the room at the time, and both of whom regarded the statement as delirious raving. Mrs. Bumpus, whose old home was in Fabius and lived with her son, Arthur Bumpus, (should be Alfred Bumpus, LAB.) at the Tallman St. address for several years, suffered with cancer. She was very weak during the last months and seldom talked. Two weeks ago Wednesday Doctor Parker, her physician, and Miss. Bumpus were seated by her bedside, when they heard her murmur a few words. They listened. "Eight ---days---" they heard her breathe. "Eight days?" queried the doctor. "Eight--days--few minutes--"she continued. "What about it?" they asked her. "I--will--die--then," the sick woman said. Her hearers believed her to be delirius and the matter was not again thought of until eight days later, when Mrs. Bumpus became weaker. Then, a week ago Thursday, just eight days and two hours after she forecast her death, she died, without explaining the phenomenon of her knowledge of approaching death, or telling anything of the workings of her mind. She was buried Saturday last from her old home in Fabius. I have never heard of anything quite so inexplicable," Doctor Parker declared "It is uncanny that her last words should foretell her death, but such was the case. I should have believed myself dreaming if I had not had others to bear out my statement." page 274
