Each time he paid $1000 for the child who was kept by her owner John McVey, until she was five years old. It was on one of these visits that he fell in love with his little cousin Piety. The exact moment he said was one day he saw her bending over a hot iron pressing a dress. He said her arms were so pretty and her face so rosy and sweet that he fell deeply in love with her and although she was very young he asked for her hand at once. The two negroe girls grew to be old women; Aunt Sarah and Aunt Fannie, and were still living when James Robert Cazort was born in 1849. Uncle Ben, Aunt Sarah's son came to Arkansas with the Cazorts. Howard Covil was the s. of Hiram and Freedome. All are buried in the Fabius Evergreen Cem., Fabius, N.Y. There is a marker on Electa's grave but the markers that were on Hiram's and Freedome's graves were removed by one Cem. caretaker and destroyed rather than his coming to the family to see if they wanted to repair or replace them, thus a piece of history lost. Hiram was b. at Nelson, Madison Co., N.Y. and d. at Fabius, Onondaga Co., N.Y. His father Jesse(g.p 6.26) d. when Hiram was very young. His mother Lydia, a seamstress attempted to care for him, but not being able to provide a suitable living and care for him, asked her brother-in-law James if he would take him and care for him. This James did and raised Hiram until he was about fourteen yrs. of age. At this time James let Hiram out to a man in Utica, N.Y. where he was indentured to learn the cabinet making trade. Hiram after his training moved about 1843-44 to Fabius, N.Y., where he m.1 Electa and m.2 Adeline, Electa's sister. He built a home on Main St., Fabius, N.Y. which is still in use by Geraldine Margaret(Bumpus) Streiff. He also aquired a piece of property on and facing what is now Academy St. or as I know it the Back Street of Fabius, N.Y. This had a house on it that was used for many yrs. as a dwelling and in later yrs. was gutted and used as a building to cure hops, one of the crops that were popular around Fabius until the early 1920's when artificial flavorings for beer made the raising of them unprofitable. My father, George Hiram Bumpus(g.p 9.6) and my uncle Alfred Howard Bumpus(g.p 9.5) were b. in this house when it was used for a dwelling, thus Howard Covil Bumpus(g.p 8.7), my grandfather must have used it as a home for a number of yrs. Hiram was a farmer, cabinet maker and undertaker in the Town of Fabius for many yrs. He made some very fine furniture. About the yr. 1978 when a local lady, Mrs. Emma Jacobe of Fabius, d., I had a conversation with her son Robert Jacobe. He told me that in looking over some old straight back chairs that his mother was still using, that he found on the bottom of the seat of them an engraving which stated, Made by Hiram Abiff Bumpus. Some of his fine scroll work was for many yrs. on display at the Museum at Highland Park, Fabius, N.Y. He made the caskets for his Funeral Business and some of the models for them are still in possession of my cousin Geraldine Margaret(Bumpus) Streiff, Fabius, N.Y. I have heard my father tell of one incident of undertaking that was cast upon my great-grandfather to take care of. It seems that a family some three or four miles south of Fabius on top of a hill had contracted smallpox and just about all of them had died in their beds of the disease. In that day it was a very dreaded desease and unless one was very healthy upon contracting the desease very little could be done for them and they would usually die. Hiram, aware of this, and knowing that some one had to take care of the dead found out how many were dead, made caskets for each and went to the task of burying them. He wrapped them in their clothing and placed them in their caskets and proceeded to bury them in this manner. Before covering the graves he took off his outer clothing and put it into graves with the dead. He later cleaned up and burned his other clothing that he wore to do the task. The buildings that these people lived in were not lived in after that and during the depression of the 1930's the C.C.C.'s under strict supervision not to attempt to save anything from page 148 page 149 g.f g.p name born died these buildings tore down the buildings and burned them. Gravestones were placed upon the graves and to my knowledge were still there about ten or twelve yrs. ago. Electa and Freedome were both b. at Brattleboro, Vt., the dau's of Stephen and Roxanne(Clark) Covil. They both d. at Fabius, N.Y. They both m., Hiram at Fabius, N.Y. At one time they run a select school for girls in Fabius, N.Y. They were teachers. Stephen Covil is buried in Fabius, N.Y., Fabius Cemetery. This is the old cemetery that is located behind the Fabuis Baptist Church. Many of the graves in this cemetery were moved to the new Fabius Evergreen Cemetery. To my knowledge Stephen's grave was one that was not moved and is located in the northeast corner of this cemetery. lod;: 7.12 Bumpus, James, Jr. 5-5-1823 7-5-1871 lod; 7.12(6.29, 5.33, 4.18, 3.9, 2,4, 1.1) James never married.
