In this article we will be looking at what happens at the beginning of one’s Christian life. This is
where an actual birth, a spiritual birth, occurs. Jesus said, “unless a man be born again, he cannot see nor enter into
the kingdom of heaven.” (John 3:3-6) He said that we are all born once, of flesh, but that we must be born a second
time, of God’s Spirit, to enter into the kingdom of heaven. When one is born again, the Spirit of God and Jesus Christ
enters into a person and an incredible change will occur. Please recognize this, an INCREDIBLE CHANGE WILL OCCUR INSTANTANEOUSLY!
Without this second birth one’s Christianity is powerless, false and utterly useless. This writer has come to believe
that most of the people sitting in churches, including most famous Christian leaders and pastors have never been born again.
This conclusion comes primarily from their own testimonies, or lack thereof, in conjunction with their teachings and lives.
This is a shocking fact, but in the times that we live in, and from the warnings that we received, it should not be completely
In this short study we are going to first look at the scriptural description of a person’s state who
has only been born once, of the flesh and then contrast it to a description of a person who has been born a second time, of
God’s Spirit. We’ll also take a look at how one can know for sure that they have been born again? Hopefully and
prayerfully you will then be able to take an honest look at your own experience and evaluate if you have ever really been
born again. Your knowledge of this is critical, for without this second birth, you are powerless and you remain dead in your
The Bible describes the person who has been born once, of the flesh only, as having blinded eyes and a blinded
mind, (2Corinthians 4:4) as living in the realm of darkness being under the power of Satan, (Acts 26:18) as being dead in
trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1) while also being enslaved to the same. (John 8:34) Now before you toss out the above description
as not being you, remember, that if a person is blinded they will not be able to see their true condition. So, here are some
specific behaviors to consider when evaluating your own life. A person’s life in this blinded condition will, at times,
manifest these types of thoughts, behaviors and actions. Now I’m not saying that a person will exhibit all, or even
most of the behaviors that I will be listing but some or many of these will have a hold on them. On the outside things may
appear fine a lot of the time but frequently they will think about, and participate in things like lying, gossiping, cursing,
hating, and coveting, they will experience strife in some of their relationships with others, speak evil about others, they
will sometimes struggle with fits of anger, and the love of money and sexual immorality (in thought also) will often also
play a big role in their lives. They are often prideful, self-centered, envious, unforgiving, bitter, malicious, greedy, and
deceitful. Some will steal, murder, commit adultery, become drunkards and drug addicts while others may delve into pornography
and homosexuality. (1Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21) Yet even though their lives are filled with behaviors such as
these in addition to their minds being infiltrated often by impure thoughts, most of these people will believe that they are
basically good people, confirming their blindness. BELIEVING THAT YOU’RE BASICALLY GOOD IS A TELL-TALE SIGN THAT ONE
HAS NEVER BEEN BORN AGAIN. Do you consider yourself to be a pretty good person? If you do, then chances are very high that
you have never been born again.
In addition, a person born of the flesh only will focus on things in this present world. They will focus on
obtaining money, careers, status, education, degrees and titles, and being respected. They will desire many possessions and
will usually be looking to acquire more. Some will pursue fame and recognition for themselves. These are all some of the characteristics
of a person born of the flesh only. Pitifully, many churches focus on the worldly things listed above and they have the audacity
to do this straight from the pulpit in today’s Christianity. Sorrowfully they attract thousands upon thousands. People
who live primarily for the focuses mentioned above are lost or have fallen terribly astray, and all will perish if they are
not born again or turned around. I cannot stress this next point enough. All people experience the characteristics of the
life born of the flesh at one point in their lives. People are not born of the flesh loving God. People haven’t always
been a Christian. People weren’t born again so young that they can’t remember the dramatic change in their life.
Those who believe that any of these things may be what happened to them are still blinded and in their sins. In addition,
don’t believe the lie that baptized infants have been born again. Those who teach this are deceivers being used to keep
people from seeing their need for this critically important second birth.
In contrast, the person who has been born a second time, of God’s Spirit, is referred to as, a new creation,
(2Corinthians 5:17) who has eyes that see and who has been given the mind of Christ.(1Corinthians 2:16) They have been transferred
from the domain of darkness to the kingdom of God‘s dear Son, (Colossians 1:13) they have been made alive in Him, have
become children of light, and the power of sin has been broken in their lives. (Romans 6:17-18) They aren’t perfect
but they will primarily experience and demonstrate things like: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23). Their thought life is clean. They have become humble, having seen their
true wretched condition and are now God-centered, others focused, generous, truthful, and trustworthy. All types of sexual
immorality, impurity, covetousness, filthiness, and evil speaking should no longer exist in their lives. (Ephesians 5:3-5)
As the Bible says about them, “the old things have passed away, all things have become new.” (2Corinthians 5:17)
Their focus will be on God’s kingdom and His righteousness. They will desire to have God receive all the glory and will
realize that anything that they have or attain to was ALL God’s doing. These are the characteristics of one who has
been born again, of God’s Spirit. This is part of what occurs when Jesus Christ takes up residence in you. It is incredible
and unmistakable. Has God’s Spirit changed you completely, in a moment, from the inside out or are you pretty much the
same person you‘ve always been? Is your focus on God’s kingdom or on things of this earth? Does your life experience
most closely resemble a person of the first birth or the second? The contrast is stark, which category does your experience
fit into? Can you honestly say that you have definitely been born again?
Can we know for sure if this has ever occurred in our life? Absolutely! Truth be said, how can one not know?
Examine, consider, and meditate on these contrasts. If a blind person is given sight, will he not see the difference? If you
walk out of complete darkness into the brightest of lights, will you not notice the change? If one is living under the power
of the devil and is controlled and filled with evil and becomes possessed by the One who is all good, all loving, and all
holy, will he not be able to recognize it? The answer to all the above questions is obvious. Of course one will see, notice
and recognize such drastic, dramatic changes. This is how the Bible contrasts the 2nd birth with the 1st.
If you have been born again, you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt. God’s Spirit bears witness with our spirit that
we have become a child of God. He promises this. (Romans 8:16) He creates you anew, old things have passed away, all things
have become new. You see your former evil, you see your self-centered ways, you see the world’s evil system, and now
it disgusts you. You are now filled with love, love for God, love for others, and a love for righteousness. This isn’t
learned, you don’t read it in a book and attempt to implement it into your life, this is a miracle work of God that
He performs inside of you, in an instant. It is absolutely incredible and unmistakable. Has this ever occurred in your life?
Anything other than a resounding “Yes!”, or “Hallelujah!”, or “Praise the Lord!”, and
you can be fairly certain that you have never met the living God and been born again. So many professing Christians, including,
once again, many Christian leaders and pastors have no dramatic testimony. How can one meet the living God, become His child,
receive His nature, be indwelt by His Holy Spirit and not be dramatically changed? Don’t kid yourself, if you truly
meet the God of the universe, you will know it and you will be dramatically changed. Don’t believe the lies heard from
most churches telling you that it’s no big deal when nothing happens but by faith you simply believe that you have been
born again. Utter nonsense, the Bible teaches no such thing and this defies logic also. When the Almighty God of the universe
enters you and gives you a new heart and a new mind, as He promises, YOU WILL KNOW IT!
In 2Corinthians 13:5 Paul writes, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves.
Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? - unless indeed you fail to meet the test.”
We have attempted through this study to give you a clearer picture of the change that will come about in your life, and the
new characteristics you can expect to experience when Jesus Christ comes to live inside of you. The true Christian faith includes
a dramatic change in those who truly believe. You see these types of changes in Jesus’ original disciples (after receiving
the Holy Spirit at Pentecost) and you see the same in believers mentioned throughout the book of Acts. They all forsook their
old lives and ways and were completely changed. Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. If you are in Christ
then you are a NEW CREATION, old things have passed away, ALL THINGS HAVE BECOME NEW. God’s Spirit will bear witness
with your spirit that you are a child of God. Do not be deceived by men who tell you differently. Our prayer here is that
no confusion on this matter will ever exist in your life again. You can and will know if you have ever been born again. Do
you pass the test?
