Denominations Are Not Pleasing To God

Do you consider yourself to be Baptist, or maybe Lutheran, or maybe Pentecostal, Methodist, or Assembly of God? When someone asks you what type of Christian you are, do you have a label you go by other than simply being a Christian? Is this the way that it should be? And why has Christianity evolved into this smorgasbord of factions and denominations? Which denomination or group is God pleased with?

First, let’s take a quick look at how new groups or denominations are born. We find that this type of thing began happening very early on, way back in the church at Corinth during the time of the Apostle Paul. He writes in 1Cor. 3:3-4, “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye yet carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul, and another, I am of Apollos, are ye yet carnal?” Here were the first recorded divisions among Christians and almost all denominations have followed a similar pattern. Envy leads to strife, which leads to division, and then a new faction is formed. Check out your denomination’s or group’s history and see if something very similar has not at one time occurred.

Is this envy and strife orchestrated by God? James writes chap. 3:14-15, “But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” So based upon this passage who appears to be the one who orchestrates these divisions?

The most important question that needs to be answered though is, Can there be a denomination or any separated group that is pleasing to God? Paul told the Corinthians who were dividing, and referring to themselves as something other than Christians, that they were carnal. In Romans 8:6-8 we are told, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity (or an enemy) against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh (carnal) cannot please God.” So is God pleased when people separate themselves and place labels upon themselves, other than that of Christian?

Stand against the overwhelming tide. Refuse to be called by any other name. All Christians are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ and have been baptized into ONE body,(1Cor. 12:13; Eph. 4:4-6) not thousands. Christ is coming back for a church (just one) without spot or blemish. (Eph. 6:25-27) Are you a member of that church?
