Jeez. I should explain why I haven't written in here for so long.

It's the same reason I haven't written much in my blog during the same period—I have a job, a real, job-type job. I'm working in a factory, and I'm on my feet for the entire eight-hour shift; most of that time (about 3/4), I'm walking from one place to another and/or lifting something fairly heavy.

Although I was apprehensive about taking this job—as I think most people from my (bourgeois) background would have been—I've grown to enjoy the physicality of the job, and I'm reaping a great fitness benefit. I've lost several pounds, and a couple of inches from my waistline. I've almost certainly added some muscle.

I've also stopped going to the gym, as it seems superfluous now. I've been doing some stretching, but I should probably do more. I should probably also do some abdominal strength exercises, if nothing else.

The problem with that, as with writing in my blog, is one of time and energy. I spend my before-work time combing the Internet for career-oriented jobs and taking care of mundane chores. After work, I don't have any energy left.

I understand why so few people with physical jobs pursue active recreation, and how people who'd laugh at the idea of joining a gym, running, or other fitness activities could still be in excellent shape.

The more disturbing realization is that an hour, or even two hours, working out in a gym doesn't come close to the workout of an eight-hour shift on a physical job. So now all I need is a high-paying, physical job in information technology with good potential for skills development and career advancement. Piece of cake. (Mmm... piece of cake—sounds delicious....)

This afternoon, I biked to the YMCA, lifted (torso/arms only), rode an efx machine for 30 minutes, then biked home, burning a total of 1036 calories in 62:15 at an average heart rate of 143 beats per minute (including lifting).

Current weight: 40.50 lbs above target weight
Resting pulse: 56 beats per minute

This afternoon at the YMCA, I lifted (just leg exercises), rode an EFX machine for 45 minutes and walked on a treadmill for 15 minutes, burning about 1050 calories in an hour at an average heart rate of about 145 beats per minute (not including lifting).

I don't have exact figures because I forgot to turn my heart rate monitor off as we left the Y. We (Mom and I) got there later than we'd intended, so I put into practice my new plan (of splitting up the lifting into three days instead of doing it all at once). I guess it's a good idea. Knowing I was doing only four exercises (squat, leg extension, hamstring curl and calf raise) made it easier to push to my absolute max on each one. I improved my form on the squat, made gains on the other three exercises, and I'll raise the weight next time on both leg extension and hamstring curl—so I think it's likely to be a success. The only bad thing is the potential for sore muscles all week!

This afternoon at the YMCA, I walked/ran on a treadmill for 20 minutes and rode an EFX for 30 minutes, burning about 850 calories in 50 minutes at an average heart rate of about 142 beats per minute (I erased the data before I recorded it. Doh!).

Thursday, August 12, 2004

This evening, I biked to the YMCA, walked/ran on a treadmill 43 minutes (about 80% walking), then biked home, burning 1021 calories in 62:13 at an average heart rate of 142 beats per minute.

My decreased performance is due to feelings of hopelessness and powerful anxiety. The source of those feelings also brings me much happiness, so I hesitate even to bring up the subject. I hate to think the costs of that association could outweigh the benefits, but I have to admit the possibility.

Current weight: 41.25 lbs above target weight
Resting pulse: 50 beats per minute

Monday and Tuesday, I went backpacking in the North Carolina mountains. Both days, I walked about 7 hours and burned at least 3500 calories. As usual, long, low-intensity exercise has had immediate, significant, positive effects (e.g. check out my resting pulse this morning). More, more more!

Sunday, August 08, 2004

This afternoon at the YMCA, I warmed up for 5 minutes on a treadmill, lifted, rode an efx for 35 minutes, then walked/ran 25 minutes on a treadmill, burning a total of 963 calories in 61:32 at an average heart rate of 138 beats per minute (not including warmup or lifting).

I did the abbreviated lifting session again, which went well. I made gains on every single exercise! To say I enjoyed this would be an exaggeration, but it wasn't too bad, and I can feel myself getting stronger.

I had another thought to make lifting more enjoyable (okay, less onerous): I could split it into two, or maybe even three sessions, so I would do only about 20 minutes of lifting at one time. I could do lower-body on the first day, upper-body the next, then abs/back on the third day. Yeah, that could totally work! I think I'll stick with what I'm doing now for a few more weeks, then I'll try that.
