Wherein a young man & his dogs go for a walk in the woods, and then proceed to tell you all about it—at least that's the plan.

I'm still here

And I've still got about 28 hours of stuff to do in an average 24 hour day. Yuck.

So, short version.

What's it like to hike 26 miles on the "toughest trail in the East?"

(physically) It made all my muscles sore, from head to toe; it burned my skin and it chafed me in, uh, certain spots. But 48 hours later, I was 99% back to normal.

(emotionally) Before I started, I dreaded it. While I was doing it, I hated it, especially towards the end. When I finished, I felt relieved. Now, reflecting on it, I feel proud and strong. Also, I feel irritated that I haven't had time to write about it (photos and story coming soon...). Also, I feel embarrassed that I felt driven to do it. But mostly I'm glad I did it. I learn more from experiences like this than from anything else; one lesson is that seemingly-impossible tasks require only the courage to keep putting one foot in front of the other. For some reason, I keep forgetting that.

What else is going on? Why no spare time?

School and family. I've taken on a few more responsibilities than I probably would have, had I realized the time commitments involved. Illustration: I just attempted to mow my lawn (with nearly-silent push reel mower) in the dark. Didn't work. But it was the only chance I've had in the last seven days. Maybe tomorrow.

Music In My Head

  • Oumou Sangaré — "Yala"
  • Bessie Smith — "Backwater Blues"
  • J.S. Bach — Toccata & Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565
  • Britney Spears — "Toxic"
  • Jimmy Buffett — "Mele Kalikimaka" (go figure)
If you live in or near Statesville, be sure to check out SMB Creations, the student store project I'm participating in through my business class.

Mapquest map / directions to SMB Creations.

Cool Stuff for cheap! All proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity of Iredell County. And we students get to find out what it's like to operate a small business. Short version: it's hard.
