Frequently Asked Questions

Are you Scottish?
No.  I was born in the United States.  I do have Scottish ancestry, as well as Irish, Welsh and many more.  I play the pipes because I love the music.

How long have you played?
I began on practice chanter in July 1997.  I started working on the pipes a few months later.  I began performing in June 1998.

Do you play for private events?
Yes.  I've played bagpipes at weddings, funerals, parties and many other occasions.  If you would like to have a piper at your special event, contact me for availability, price, etc.:

Is it hard to play bagpipes?
Yes. It takes a great deal of work to get going, and then it takes many hours of practice to maintain one's abilities.

How should I get started?
Find a teacher.  Find a local performer or band and ask them for assistance.
You will need a practice chanter (don't worry about the actual bagpipes until later). I recommend the standard size polypenco (plastic) chanter made Gibson.  (Unlike other standard size chanters, the finger spacing is the same as on the bagpipe chanter).
As far as a book for beginners, I suggest The Piper's Primer.
