casting on
[the slingshot method]

setup a
Start by putting a slipknot on the needle and holding it in your right hand. NOTE: for this cast on method, you will need a long tail, so make your slipknot a few to several feet away from the end.

setup b
Put your index finger and thumb between the two strands hanging down, then grab the lower part of the two strands with the other three fingers of your left hand.

setup c
Spread the index finger and thumb of your left hand apart. Put the index finger of your right hand on the slipknot to keep it from sliding off, then move the needle down and right.

setup d
This is what it should look like now. This is the starting position for your cast on.

step one: up
Put the point of the needle up and through the lower part of the loop on your thumb.

step two: down
Now put the point of the needle down and through the lower part of the loop on your index finger.

step three: through
Bring the point of the needle toward you back through the thumb loop.

step four: off
Drop the loop on your thumb off, then put your thumb next to the lower strand from the inside.

step five: tighten
Pull down on both strands as you spread your index finger and thumb apart again.

step six: done!
One stitch cast on! Notice that from here, when you drop the needle down and right as you did in setup c above, you will be ready for your next cast on stitch. Repeat steps one through six again for each stitch you need to cast on.
