Here is the photo as taken from my parents driveway

cropping the photo results in this

I thought that this photo had a lot of potential, and knowing that I could think of many different ways to compose this in my abstracted style, and also knowing that I had to get my ideas down on paper first in order to see the results, I decided that I could explore this scene more fully if I did a variety of attempts in a series, and then decide what worked best.

Third, and best, full scale oil pastel, using best aspects of all

As you could probably see, the scene progressed as I further explored the possible combinations of shapes and colors...thus culminating in several well done pieces.  This is a fair and expected practice by artists who really want to make their art the best way that they can.  They are all originals.  The initial photo was "first"...thus "the original," but it would be wrong to say that the rest, just because they were not done first, are not originals also.  Afterall, I have a belief that making art is not always doing what looks right, but instead, it is correcting what looks wrong.  To progress and grow requires rehashing of your own ideas. It is not considered "derivative" to use your own work to make some more of your own art...this is perfectly the artists right.  "Derivative" refers to using another artists' work or ideas.  And as an artist, I will only improve as I learn more, so all my art, when anylized in the future by myself, may be then seen as flawed, thus may lead to further improved development.  This is how good art becomes great art, and only the artist has that right, and would be cheating himself and the public if he felt he couldn't do that.  For, if I were to look at a really good painting that I did in the past and sold, and now see all sorts of errors and ways to make improvements to make a really great painting...one that could make me famous, I would be stupid to not make what could be a masterpiece.  This is still the artist's right, for even after the sale of a piece of art, the artist still owns the rights to the image according to U.S. copyright law.
