Creating a bronze sculpture can be a lengthy process. The method has not changed much for thousands of years, and it still boils down to hours and hours of work. This is just a short synopsis of how it works.

Between the sketches and the finished piece is where all the real work is. From initial concept to the final product may take close to a year. Several months studio time for the sculptor, who may often have several projects underway at once, and then an additional two to three months at the foundry.

When the original wax sculpture is finished, and approved by the client in the case of a commission, it moves on to the foundry. At this point a second payment of 1/3 of the total cost is required.

The lost wax casting process contains 52 separate operations, each carried out by skilled artisans.
It is a lengthy, difficult, sometimes dangerous venture, and worthy of an entire site explaining the various steps.
Perhaps another time.

The photos at right are of the molten bronze being poured into ceramic shells.

The final result, below, one of four, installed at the entrance to a private estate. Upon completion of the project, the final payment is due.

Whether a commission, like this one, or just for fun, it all begins with sketches.

The first sketch was one of half a dozen different ideas. When the client chose the direction, it was followed up with more sketches to flesh out the idea. As the sketches may or may not lead to a sculpture commission, they are priced separately.

Once the sketches are completed, the sculptor and foundry can use them to estimate the cost of the sculpture. If the cost of the sculpture is acceptable, a nonrefundable down payment of 1/3 of the total is required to commission the work.

These sketches led directly to the finished piece at left.
