Adoption Facts

  • 20,679 international adoptions in 2006, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of State.
  • 6,493 adoptions from China in 2006 according to figures released by the U.S. Department of State.
  • 3,706 adoptions from Russia in 2006 according to figures released by the U.S. Department of State.
  • 460 adoptions from Ukraine in 2006 according to figures released by the U.S. Department of State (Note: Adoptions in Ukraine have been stopped periodically over the last few years also, Ukraine has a maximum number of dossiers they will accept each year from perspective U.S. parents).
  • 4,135 adoptions from Guatemala in 2006 according to figures released by U.S. Department of State. Guatemala is now the second most adopted from country.

Those are some amazing numbers. Thousands of people are adopting from all over the world and for some it's a second or third adoption. International adoptions have increased steadily over the years. Many say it's due to celebrity adoptions being covered by the media. That may be a factor however; international adoptions were steadily increasing long before the "starts" made it popular.

This will be our first adoption.

2006 actually saw a decrease in the numbers from some of the most sought after countries. Many of the countries restricted adoptions or stopped them altogether to establish adoption reform.

I have not been able to find information on the number of domestic Adoptions.

We will add information as we construct the site.
