4. James Peter GREENE ⁽¹⁾⁽²⁾ was born on 23 Oct 1907 in Burslem Subdis, Wolstanton Dis, Stafford Co., England. ^{(3)(4) (5)} (Address: 7 Chapel Bank, Sneyd Street. This area was part of the "Six Towns" area of England known as The Potteries because of the presence of pottery factories there since at least the 19th Century.) He resided 7 Chapel Bank, Sneyd St. after 23 Oct 1907 in Burslem Subdis, Wolstanton Dis, Stafford Co., England.⁽⁵⁾ He was educated grade school between 1912 and 1919 in England. ⁽¹⁾ (School years estimated; supposedly James was educated through 6th Grade (abt age 12).) He was a potter between 1919 and 1925 in Stafford Co., England.⁽¹⁾ It is believed that James worked in a pottery factory in England as a boy, probably in the "Six Towns" area where he grew up, since it was famous for that work. He was Roman Catholic before 1925 in England.⁽¹⁾ (It is believed he was Catholic before he emigrated to the U.S.) He emigrated about 1925 from England.⁽¹⁾ (It is believed he emigrated at age 18.) He resided between 1925 and 1926 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI. ⁽¹⁾ (It is believed that he worked in Detroit for a year before being convinced by his brothers to move to Windber, PA.) He was a coal miner at the Berwind-White Co. coal mine, Mine 40, between 1925 and 1947 in Windber, Somerset Co., PA.⁽¹⁾ He was employed by the Berwind-White Co. coal mine, Mine 40. (Unsure if this was his only U.S. employer.) He resided between 1926 and Nov 1929 in Windber, Somerset Co., PA.⁽⁶⁾ (The residence is believed to have been on 20th St.) He was Lutheran in 1929 in Windber, Somerset Co., PA.⁽¹⁾ (This is based on information that James and Catherine were married in a Lutheran church) He resided 20th St. between 1929 and 1940 in Windber, Somerset Co., PA. ⁽¹⁾ (Residence date estimated: it is known that James and Catherine moved into a house on 20th St. after they were married (?Nov 1929).) He resided 1101 2nd Street between 1940 and May 1947 in Scalp Level, Cambria Co., PA. ⁽¹⁾⁽⁷⁾ (The house was located in the Mine 40 area of Scalp Level, across from the Berwind coal processing facility. The house was built by James' employer, the Berwind-White Co., as was probably the case for many miners. James lived in this house until his death. A possible discrepancy that needs to be evaluated is the obituary of father Park GREENE which mentions James living in "Mine 47.") He died on 20 May 1947 in Scalp Level, Cambria Co., PA. ⁽³⁾⁽⁴⁾ (He died in Windber Hospital, Windber, PA, of the occupational disease black lung (a.k.a. silicosis).) He was buried after 20 May 1947 in Richland Cemetery, Richland Twp., Cambria Co., PA.⁽³⁾⁽⁴⁾ (He was buried across from corner of plot area 'A.' James' funeral was at the Meek Funeral Home, Windber, PA, Rev. William A. Coxe.) He was also known as Peter GEEHAN or James GREEN.⁽¹⁾ (He changed his name from Peter GEEHAN to James Peter GREENE after emigrating to the U.S.) One family story is that James walked from Windber to downtown Johnstown (about 13 miles) to see the aftermath of the 1936Johnstown flood.
