Traveling through the farmlands of Schuylkill County one would never imagine what used to sit along its country roads. There were thriving towns and industries, all supporting the Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad. Construction began on the railroad around 1840 and continued into 1854. It ran under many different companies over the years, (such as the Dauphin & Susquehanna Coal Company and Philadelphia & Reading Railroad) but the majority of the railroad finally ceased operation in the 1940s under the Reading Company.
Today memories of the 26 stations are vanishing rapidly with the growth of the rural countryside. A brief overview of this vanishing history can be found on this website, so those who were there can remember the past and those of the future can learn from it.
Any memories, stories, photographs, or any other information about the railroad would be greatly appericated. My collection continues to grow, and I am almost certain that I will never find everything there is out there on the old S&S.
This website is a work in progress. It was created after the first version of the website (2003-2007) became too small for the amount of information placed on it and the amount of hits it was receiving (3608 as of its revamping) became too great. An up-to-date website has been started to commerate my upcoming 10th year of studying the railroad. Please check back again for updated information.
