Brown Park's Landscaping progress - phase two

Nine years ago, we finished four days of tree planting in all three of our city's parks! Thirty-five donated trees were planted throughout our Brown Park, two donated October Glory red maples now reside in the northeast quadrant of our Town Square, one donated red oak was planted in Cornwell Park, and five donated trees are now growing in our city's new tree nursery! In all, these trees are valued at six thousand dollars! This is in addition to the sixty-five donated trees we received two years ago!

We planted a grove of seven Red Sunset red maples just north of our munnicipal swimming pool. They are located in an area that we are developing into a new picnic area! Eight years ago, our city crews removed thirteen ice-damaged red cedars that lined the north side of the pool's parking lot. (Recently, two October Glory red maples, a sweet gum, and one Shumard oak were planted west and northwest of the city's swimming pool. We also transplanted a burr oak to the area just southwest of the pool.)

Following K-State's Horticulture Department's suggestions(see Brown Park landscaping plans), we have planted 14 trees in Brown Park's landscaped area - 2 Shumard oaks, 5 red maples, 3 Kentucky Coffeetrees, one English oak and 3 Washington Hawthorns. Two Shumard oaks were planted fairly close to where the large slipper slide is now. Hopefully, red maples and Kentucky Coffeetrees will be planted in three islands to be located in the main parking area. The English oak will be planted down the hill in front of the Scout Cabin.

Of the trees that were planted seven years ago are: 5 Austrian pines, 2 Scotch pines, 2 White pines, 3 blue spruce, 2 London planetrees, 1 honey locust, 3 Davids crabapples, 1 Prairiefire crabapple, 2 Heritage river birches, 2 Redspire flowering pears, 7 Red Sunset red maples, 4 October Glory red maples, 4 Autumn Blaze Freeman maples, 2 red oak, 1 English oak, and 2 bur oak. And all those trees were fairly large, averaging from 12' - 20' in height! All were spaded into place.

Our city work crews had mixed approximately twenty truckloads of compost(from one of our city's large compost piles) with an equal amount of soil. One-fifth of this soil mixture was used to build up the base of the new flower and shrub display(see Brown Park landscaping plans and More plants for our flower and shrub display)located on the northwest side of Brown Park's main area while the other four-fifth's was used for the main park's grading

Five years ago we prepared the ground and planted a new lawn in our park. Today, our park has a beautiful a beautiful lawn!

A new underground sprinkling system was installed in the main park area and on Brown Hill.

Three years ago, two amur maples were planted just north of our city's tennis courts. They should eventually provide much needed shade for our tennis patrons!

All four of our Brown Park picnic shelters received new light brown corrugated tin roofs, thanks to the efforts of our city's work crews. In addition, each shelter now has new picnic tables, barbeque grills, and trash receptables. In 2004, a new picnic shelter was constructed just north of our city swimming pool.

The Boy Scout Cabin was given two new coats of red paint five years ago.
