Welcome to my stories of my cycling trips in the United States

This is my online journal of my cycling trips.  Most of the content describes my cross-country cycling trip in 2003, but it also has some of my more recent trips, including a trip to New Hampshire in August 2006.

My 2003 cycling trip started in Vancouver, Washington (Portland, Oregon) on August 2, 2003 with my former girlfriend, Chelsea Wessel.  She and I rode to Bozeman, Montana together though the month of August, at which point Chelsea returned to Oakland and her job as a teacher.  After Bozeman, I attempted to ride to the East Coast by myself.  I was hoping to end the trip in November, 2003 in Wilmington, North Carolina.  But the combination of the cold, loneliness, irritating drivers, and steep climbs in the Appalachians forced me to stop my trip in Blountville, Tennessee.  In Tennessee, I rented a Cadillac DeVille (it's the cheapest one-way rental I could find!) and drove to Richmond, Virginia.  I thought that on my drive to Richmond, I might change my mind about ending the trip and continue to Wilmington.  I didn't change my mind and a few days later, I caught Amtrack home via Washington, D.C. and Chicago.

Note that there are a lot of images on these webpages.  So they may take a while to load.  Also some of the images start as thumbnails.  Hit the reload button on your browser a couple of times and this should load the full size images.

The following set of numbers are the weeks in which I posted information to the website.  For example selecting "2003.07.01" selects the first items that were posted to the website.

Day 1 (NH) - Ride from Manchester to New Hampton
Today's ride was a moderate 75 miles in rolling hills.  Of course, I did not train much before this ride, so I seriously ran out of energy after the longest climb of the day.  When I arrived in Salisbury, I still had 30 miles to go, it was raining, and I had no energy.

Highlights of the day include:
- Chatting up the owner of Alternative Bike Store in Pinardville, NH.  I'm not sure what the "Alternative" stands for.
- Being offered 5 bikes by an old-timer at my stop at the gas station at Salisbury.  Maybe I would have become a Craigslist millionaire if I had taken him up on his offer.
- Watching the "scratchers" lottery addict as she went back and forth from the Salisbury mini-market.  She would purchase some scratchers from the mini-market.  She would then go back to her old-model SUV and scratch to see if she had won.  When she realized she had not won should return again to the mini-mart.  She did this 3 or 4 times (at least while I was there).
- Getting a deep discount at my campsite and talking to the campsite owner who was schooled as a civil engineer/environmental engineer and used work for a contractor who did rehabs on small wastewater treatment plants.
