4. JAMES Lane


JAMES LANE

James Lane was born in England Ricksmanworth, Hertford County . His first wife was Ann and he had a daughter by the same name. After her death he married Sarah White , Daughter of John and Mary( Phips) White. Mary Phips was a half sister of Sir William Phips, Governor of Massachusetts. They had Six children . James came to America with his two brothers Job and Edward about 1656; after paying taxes on property in England whihch left them short in pocket . they settled in Malden , Mass . Later Job settled in Bellerica, Mass and Edward went to Boston.
James of a more pioneer spirit , pitched his tent at Casco Bay, Maine. he acquired large tracts of land, giving his name to a point of land off the east bank of Royalls River. Tradition says Lane's Island is where the Indians planted their corn and burried their dead.
On September 12 , 1675 a massacre of four adults and three children occured and on august 11, 1676 Falmouth , ( Latter Portland) was attacked and thirty- four killed or captured. James was serving with the Military during this first Indian war as a Sargent and was killed by the Indians at this time
