Most of what is known about Alfred comes from Census and Marriage records in Wilson and Sumner Counties in TN. He was the son of Green Williford and Lucy Alley born around 1810 in Wilson County. In 1833 he married Mary Perkins and moved across the Cumberland River into Sumner County near the town of Gallatin. His family must have lived near that city on the other side of the river in Wilson County. He may have worked on the other side where he met his future wife. Some evidence, though, indicates that his parents were married in Sumner County. This is quite possible since Wilson County was once part of Sumner County.

In any case, he raised his family in Sumner. He and Mary had 4 children, Martha, Greene, Mary, and William. His first wife must have died sometime after 1841 maybe even during the birth of her last child William. He then remarried in circa 1842 to a woman known only as Eliza. By her he had his remaining children, John Henry, the author's Great-Great-Grandfather, and Francis.

By the 1860 US Census, Alfred is no longer listed. His children, however, are listed in the Sumner County US Census and scattered in nearby homes of what appears to be unrelated families. Thus, Alfred may have died and the family may have moved into their neighbors homes and worked as farm hands. In fact, his son John Henry, moved into the Brown family home and was listed as "works on farm". In that same household was a young girl named Martha Elizabeth near his same age. It seems very likely that young John fell in love with her and married her 4 years later during the Civil War.

One interesting result is the fact that Alfred's mother lived only 2 houses away from the Joseph B. McGlothlin family in the 1830 Census (See: Lucy Hodges). In that household were 2 boys aged 20-30. One of the boys may have been James McGlothlin, the man who performed Alfred and Mary Perkins' wedding. There even appears to be a James McGlothlin living near Lucy Hodges, Alfred's remarried mother (widowed) in the 1840 Census.

Alfred Williford and Mary Perkins had the following children:
