What little is known of William comes from his niece, Alley Willerford. It seems that his mother always felt sorry for him since his father died when he was a young boy. This may be the reason why he preferred to be alone out in the wilderness. Alley used to say that, 'Uncle Bill was an outdoorsman'. His outdoor way of life was demonstrated to the family when he visited his sister, Cordelia, in Miami and roasted a wild boar in a pit at the family's homestead in the Grove.
