You've decided to buy a puppy. Here are some tips to help you through the first 24 hours to 2 weeks.
- If you work during the week, try to take your puppy home on a Friday afternoon or Saturday morning so you can have the
entire weekend with each other.
- You will need to purchase Purina complete nutrition formula Puppy Chow to keep your puppy on the same diet.
- For the ride home, make sure your pup was not fed 3-4 hours before you take him home. He could become car sick.
- Play soft soothing music for the trip home.
- The best place for a new pup to sleep for the first night would be in your bedroom in a crate where he knows he isn't
alone. You will be able to hear when he wines or gets restless so there will not be an accident.
- Bring a small blanket or towel to rub on his mother so the smell will comfort him during his transition time.
- When it's time to eat, puppies want to eat alone, without distractions or having to feel rushed or threatened. So
don't put him in the middle of the kitchen floor, he needs his own little spot to eat with his own bowls.
- During the day, limit your pup to one room where he can't get into any trouble. If your pup wants attention and
you are busy, distract him with a chew toy. (Hint: Don't give him an old shoe because he will think your nice
shoes are chew toys!)
- Where do you want your pup to potty? Take him to the same spot every time.
- For the first 24 hours or so only let your pup see the family. If your pup has too many new things changed too quickly,
he will be stressed out. Even after the first 24 hours, only let him meet 1 or 2 new people at a time.
