SMUG October '99 Disk of the Month

Assembled by Thomas Carlson

DealMac Sherlock Plug-in
The dealmac Sherlock plug-in will allow you to add dealmac.com to the list of sites that you can search using Apple's Sherlock technology. Using the plug-in you can search the dealmac archives to locate the best prices on a variety of Macintosh harware and software products. Requires Sherlock and Mac OS 8.5 or later. Free

Enigma
Enigma anti&endash;telemarketing software guides its users in the fine art of telling telemarketers to stop calling them and holding telemarketers accountable for their actions. Federal regulations require that telemarketers keep and maintain a Do Not Call List. This is a list of phone numbers that telemarketers may not call again for ten years. By reading through Enigma's questions you get to take up their time, get your name on their list, and make them pay for a stamp. Requires System 7.5 or later. Free

Eudora Thing 1.6
Eudora Thing is a system extension which patches the way your Mac will draw text on the screen. To make a long story short, every time your Mac draws text, it will check to see if it's in the Eudora application, if it is, and the string of text starts with one or more ">"s, ":"s, "|"s, or ")"s, it will change the color of that text. Eudora 4.1 introduces colorized quotes, but they only use one color to colorize all levels of quotes, and will only recognize the ">" symbol. Eudora Thing will colorize up to five levels of quotes with different colors, and whatever symbols you define. You really do need Eudora. $5

Finder Keeper
FinderKeeper is an extension which organizes your desktop by neatly stacking windows on-the-fly. Each disk on your Mac is given a starting point, and as you open windows they cascade down and to the right. The result is a neat, logically arranged desktop and it's all done automatically. Includes control panel to customize. $17

FinderPop 1.8.1
FinderPop is a control panel which extends the Mac OS 8 Finder's contextual menus. Features include: user-selectable contextual menu font/size/icon size, automagic CM popup by clicking and holding without having to press the control key, disk, folder and StuffIt™ archive navigation, and a number of optional submenus &emdash; including Processes, contents of selected folder, Finder windows, FinderPop, and Desktop. Additionally, it enhances navigation via the Standard File dialogs. Requires contextual menus (which come with MacOS 8.0 or later). $8.

Make Netscape Use Eudora
Don't you love it when a name tells you exactly what it does? An Applescript. Free.

Menuette 3.0
Menuette replaces the boring, old-fashioned words in your Macintosh menu bar (such as File and Edit) with colorful, space-saving icons. Whether you suffer from a crowded menu bar on a too-small screen, or you just want to look awfully cool, Menuette's the solution! $19.95

NiftyDrag 1.4e
NiftyDrag extension lets you drag ANYWHERE on the window; normal windows, background windows and Dialogs. Press "Command"&"Control" keys and drag it! Free.

NotifyMail
NotifyMail is a new mail notifier; it works in cooperation with your server to notify you immediately when new mail comes in. It is not an active checker like your email client (Eudora, Emailer, Pegasus, Outlook Express, etc.), but a passive listener, listening for a cue from the server when new mail has arrived. $18.

PDF&endash;Blit™ 1.0
PDF-Blit is an extension, or plug-in, for BBEdit (and BBEdit Lite), the text editor marketed by Bare Bones Software. The plug-in is designed to give a PDF export capability to BBEdit, thereby letting BBEdit users create attractive, richly formatted documents without having to use Distiller, Acrobat, or any other PDF authoring software. With PDF-Blit, you can output Portable Document Format files directly from BBEdit. Free

SetFolders 1.2
To prepare a CD masterization, you need to control the current settings for all the Folders you will copy: position, order view, size... SetFolders, in only one step, can set all the parameters of the subfolders contained in the Folder chosen. The shareware version can manage up to 20 sub-folders.

SpeedBeep
Speed Beep plays a different sound each time your Macintosh beeps, and can allow 2 or more beeps to play at the same time on some Macintoshes. Speed Beep also allows you to keep using your Macintosh while a beep sound is playing, even if you don't have Apple's Sound Manager 3.1. This is obviously especially helpful if you use longer beep sounds, but it also eliminates the delay you encounter when a number of short beeps play in a row. $10

The Atomic Mac
The Atomic Mac is a shareware Periodic Table of the Elements for the Macintosh. Until you register, you will only be able to look at data for a few selected elements. When you first launch The Atomic Mac, you see a normal presentation of the periodic table of the elements. Clicking on one of the elements brings up a small window that contains detailed information about that element. There are five different sets of detailed information you can display, selected from the Info menu. $25

Tip O' the Month

From Your Shareware Team

Cory Knox, Mac Systems Guru at Pixar Animation Studios discovered a cool trick to have DVD movies play as the background of your DVD-equipped Blue & White G3:

  1. Open Apple DVD Player and play a DVD movie.
  2. Hide the controller.
  3. Make the movie fill the screen.
  4. Present movie in screen.
  5. Take screenshot.
  6. Make screenshot the background using the Appearance Control Panel.
  7. Repeat steps 1-4, then
  8. Hide the Apple DVD Player.

You'll notice that the movie is now playing behind your desktop icons!

SIMPLY MAC

Mac basics we sometimes forget

Sometimes I think the only difference between "experts" and the rest of us poor users is ATTITUDE: real experts are just people who try to see the underlying principles, not just the details. That and enough time and study puts them ahead of the game.

Take the business of renaming a file. On Windows you have to right-click on the icon, select Rename from the menu, and THEN (and only then) can you overtype the file name below the icon. But I ran into an odd "feature" the other day - Windows does not let you change a file name from lower to upper case. Pretty dumb, huh? Now how do you solve this problem? An expert would understand the reason for the rejection (Windows figures they are the same and that you are creating a file with the same name as an existing file!) and would think: Just change the name to something else, then to the upper-case version. The MacOS does not have this problem (names ARE case-sensitive), but the basic idea is the same: figure out WHY the system balks at something, and you can figure out a way around it!
