October Demo by Owen Saxton

A Farewell to Kings 2.0.1
A Farewell to Kings is a totally unique concept in solitaire. The focus of the game is more on logic and strategy than on luck-of-the-draw. Requires System 7.6.1 or higher. $15.

BinCalc 2.1 Carbon
This simple calculator was written for programmers. It lets you manipulate 32-bit numbers in a variety of formats using the appropriate math for the current edit field. Turn bits on and off by clicking on them. Peform binary functions. Operates much like an RPN calculator. Requires OS 9 or higher. Free.

Calculator 2.0 Carbon
This basic calculator features an "adding machine" tape display, a full set of trigonometric functions, rectangular <> polar conversions, degrees or radians mode, radian and temperature conversion, memory storage, and much more. Requires OS 9 or higher. Free.

Disk Surveyor 2.5
DiskSurveyor doesn't promise to make your hard drive any bigger, but it does show you, GRAPHICALLY, what's hogging all that space. Click on a folder and zoom in for a closer look. Or zoom back out. Shift-click on a folder, and it brings up the ACTUAL folder so you and can drag the "offending" files to the Trash or your backup volume. Create DiskSummary files that list all the files found on CDROMs or any other volume. No longer will you have to waste valuable time navigating through folder after folder trying to figure out which files need to be archived or trashed to free up precious disk space. Requires System 7 or higher. $15.

Life 3.0 Carbon
Life is a small application which displays a simulation of cells which live & die by simple rules. The original Life concept was created by John Conway and popularized in Scientific American's Mathematical Recreations column years ago. Requires OS 9 or higher. Free.

LifeHex 2.0
A cellular automata system simulator (such like so called Jon Conway's Life Game) that attempts to be entertaining. Features fairly fast execution of generations, various rendering effects and lets you create new rules (over 50 interesting rules are initially built in). It also works as MacDim screensaver module. Requires OS 8.6 or higher. Free.

MooseCalc 1.1.8
Moose Calc is a multifunction calculator with added features. First, it is a standard numeric calculator with trig functions. Second, it can add and subtract dates, and convert between various calendars. Third, it can show the time in cities around the world, and contains a stopwatch and countdown timer. Fourth, it contains a computer calculator which can use binary, octal and hexadecimal numbers. Last, it handles Roman numerals! Requires OS 8.1 or higher. $15.

Periodic Table 3.0
This program displays the periodic table of the elements and features many properties of each element. The driving force behind its development was to exceed the usability of current products, add new features not available in current products, and, of course, to make software that met our own high standards. Requires System 7.5 or higher. $15.

The Free Memory Show 2.3
The Free Memory Show is a utility which displays the free memory in a small window that can be positioned anywhere on the screen. It can also notify you when the free memory falls below an adjustable value. As an AppleScript, many of its properties can be configured using the Script Editor. Requires OS 8.1 or higher. $5,

VSE Link Tester 3.2.1
VSE Link Tester is the most comprehensive link validation utility for Macintosh computers. It allows you to fix dead links and locate missing resources. Bad links and malfunctioning site features cost page impressions, customers and respect. VSE Link Tester helps Mac users to fix these errors before they harm their online business. Requires System 7.5 or higher. $34.95.

WeatherMan 1.2.1
WeatherMan downloads real-time weather information directly from the National Weather Service Weather Gateway. It has a feature set not found in any other weather program for the Macintosh, including current weather conditions, current and extended forecast information, animated radar images, and AppleScript support. Requires any system version with Open Transport. $10.

Security Alert!

From Your Shareware Team

Aren't you glad you use a mac? The W32/nimda worm had brought half the Windows world to its knees. Well, don't get too cocky. The worm will not run on your machine, but you can still spread it inadvertantly. PLEASE be very careful of unexpected attachments, especially those which can run in some environment on your machine. Files ending in .exe will not hurt you, but watch out for .vcf. Its a dangerous world out there - be careful.

Tip O' the Month

From Leo's Mac Tip

Each OS X application has a single icon, but inside the icon there's much more. These icons are like folders that contain all the information the program needs. Some of the resources, such as icons and bitmaps, can be reused.

To see what's inside an OS X application package follow these steps:

  1. Hold down the control key.
  2. Click on a program icon.
  3. Select Show Package Contents to reveal the world inside an OS X application.

For instance, you can pull the images from the Forest Screen Saver to use as wallpaper.

  1. Look inside the System/Library/Screen Savers folder.
  2. Control click on Forest.saver.
  3. Open the Contents/Resources/Images folder.
  4. Copy the JPEGs from that folder to another location for use as wallpaper.

Mac basics we sometimes forget

I guess nobody is interested in how to eject a floppy disk.

Try this on: how many different ways can you make your mac boot from another drive? There are at least 3. Name them.

My choices, only, out of hundreds of items every month. Drop me a note for YOUR favorite. Links below are either info about or actual downloads, and include commercial products, as well as shareware. These do NOT include demos or beta releases. You might check out Version Tracker for more.
