March 2001

by Louis Bookbinder

From Louis Bookbinder:

As some of you may have heard, I was unhappy enough with some recent events to want to quit. Several people in the club have begged me to stay on. But with some developments in my life (being accepted to grad school at SJSU being one of them) I feel some of my SMUG activities have to come to an end. Especially with the incidents which caused me so much trouble. I won't go into them but you saw the results in some abbreviated shareware pages in this publication.

In any case, here are most of the things I do for the club:

The first 3 items take a lot of time. I would guess about 5 hours a month. Each. And while every one of these items is rewarding in its way, I have to cut back somewhere. I definitely resign as head of the shareware team. I also want to resign as VP, but that can wait a few months (although Tuesday nights are now for my Ed Psych class - sorry!).

Meanwhile most things remain the same. You can still get these web pages off my host site, earthlink. The other SMUG web hosting is in contention at this time - we will see if we can recover it. I will still contribute to the newsletter, hopefully with more help.

The shareware team remains superb, and continues putting out a superior product. My praises, especially Owen Saxton, who has taken on just about the entire CDOQ production, single-handed, and Thomas Carlson, who is always there to help.

This month's Free Sample Shareware is. See for details. -------------------------------------------------

In contrast to a word processor, whose purpose is to prepare documents for optimal visual presentation, the focus of a text editor is on the transformation and manipulation of text as data, rather than on manipulation of visual attributes (such as style or color).

Security Alert!

From Your Shareware Team

Malissa X is a malicious macro virus lodging in MS Office. It can infect Macs. It can also infect PCs. Since PCs tend to ignore anything Mac, PC antivirus software tends to ignore the Mac-type viral signatures of Malissa and its cousins. Does Mac antivirus software ignore PC-type viruses? Just don't think your Mac is safe loading files from a PC. Know your sources!-------------------------------------------------

Tip O' the Month

From Your Shareware Team

Where do you put Sherlock plugins (.src files)? We demo two of them this month. If you have Sherlock 2, just drop the plug-in on it and it will be put in the right folder in the system file.

Mac basics we sometimes forget

How can you get programs to start automatically? Put them in the startup folder! The startup folder is inside the system folder. For the sake of organization, put the actual software elsewhere, and put an ALIAS in the startup folder. Keep the original where you can find it even if you disable the startup using Extension Manager.

My choices, only, out of hundreds of items every month. Drop me a note for YOUR favorite. Links below are either info about or actual downloads, and include commercial products, as well as shareware. These do NOT include demos or beta releases. You might check out Version Tracker for more.
® means update to recently released CDOQ item. Wish we could catch them all....
