Acme Filters-236

utilities you may be currently using. Currently, Acme Filters
includes the following filters:
Free
BuzzwordBingoV1.9
Buzzword Bingo is a HyperCard stack that generates random Bingo
cards from a list of words either typed in by the user or imported
from a text file. I suppose this stack could be used to generate
legitmate Bingo cards, but it would not be half the fun of generating
Buzzword Bingo Cards to be used at staff meetings! Thanks to Dilbert
for the inspiration for this stack... free
CDFinder 2.0
This easy-to-use and fast application creates catalog files of
CD-ROMs, hard disks, floppies, ZIPs and almost everything that spins.
Using the powerful search functions you can easily locate and display
files or folders. $15
CookieCommander 1.0.1
CookieCommander is an application that cleans the Cookies file
that a web browser maintains. Like its predecessor, NoMoreCookies,
CCommander allows you to delete the file at once. With CCommander, a
user can choose which cookies to keep and which to throw away.
Cookies can be selected as "Gourmet" which will make CCommander skip
over them when cleaning the file. Many options are customizable. For
instance, you can choose to have CCommander simply delete the file
when run or clean the file getting rid of non-gourmet cookies. In
this case, the application would run in the background and not show
the cookie window. $10
Delete Now 1.0
Delete Now is a Contextual Menu Manager plugin, designed to be
used with Mac OS 8. It allows you to permanently delete individual
files and folders from the Trash. No longer do you have to empty the
entire trash, just to delete one large file. $5
EcoMunch 1.0
EcoMunch is a simple predator-prey simulation extended from an
old Scientific American article (Mathematical Games or one of its
successor columns, I don't remember which). The original simulation
had two species and no terrain. EcoMunch has four species and four
types of terrain. Free
Enigma 2.7
Enigma is an application designed to completely protect your
privacy at very low cost. If you would prefer your neighbors not see
your personal finance data, your coworkers not see your performance
appraisal, or your competitors see your trade secrets then Enigma is
an application you will find very valuable. $20
MacOS8 CMM Expansion Pack v1.1
The OS8 CMM Expansion Pack was written to expand the
functionality of the MacOS8 contextual menu which is acessed by
holding down the control key while clicking on anything in the OS8
Finder. Two plugins are provided, Finder Info 1.0 and Set Custom Icon
1.1. Additionally, the pack includes a small utility, Visibility 1.0.
$10
MovieUtilities CMM 1.1
These plug-ins let you manipulate QuickTime movies in many useful
ways. You can:
$15
Orniwell-310
Orniwell is a unusual text viewer which lets users view very
large text files and navigate inside them using keywords. Orniwell
can color the text according to the keywords, all without opening any
dialog. $16
Put Away CM 1.0b
Put Away CM is a Contextual Menu plugin for use with MacOS 8 on a
Power Macintosh. With Put Away CM, you can easily move selected files
to folders of your choice, on any volume available, with just one
click! Free
Trilite
Trilite is a shareware game similiar to tic-tac-toe, but much
more fun and challenging. The object is to get three adjacent squares
set to your color. These squares may be horizontal, vertical, or
diagonal. On your turn, click on any empty square to fill it with
your color. Sound simple enough? Well, here's the trick: you may only
have three squares at a time. Once you click on a fourth square, the
first one you selected becomes empty again, allowing your opponent to
make a surprise move. You may play against another person or a
computer player (with two levels of difficulty). $5

Several folks noted a conflict between Conflict Catcher 4.1 and Global Village Toolkit extension. Turns out the problem is with Global Village Toolkit alone - unless it loads really early in the startup process, it will not be able to allocate enough contiguous workspace (only about 2 Megs) to function properly. Conflict Catcher just triggers the fault faster than most other applications.
MacOS 8.1 will provide a new file format - HFS+. Current utilities like Hard Disk Toolkit and Norton Utilities have only prepared for HFS+ in that they will not attempt to work with it - they can not. Previous versions will crash with HFS+.
Eudora Pro 4.0b57 (a LOT of betas!) replaces Apple's Appearance Manager 1.0 with version 1.0.2. BUT, it also installs the Appearance Manager when running under system 7.6 or earlier, which will crash the system on startup. If you HAVE to use the beta, remove the Appearance Manager if you are running 7.6 or earlier.

In OS 8's Appearance control panel you have the option to change the system font - the Charcoal and Chicago fonts are the usual two choices. A message in the control panel tells us that you must restart for the change in fonts to take effect. Nonsense. Just hold down the Option key when you select another font and the change takes place immediately. - TipWorld
If you travel with a PowerBook, keep these power-saving tips (from TipWorld) in mind:

If you have an older 68030 or 68040 machine and you notice that your System software is taking up nearly every megabyte of RAM in your Mac (and we're talking an inordinate amount, such as 14MB out of an available 16MB) it's likely that you've neglected to turn on 32-bit addressing. To do so, open the Memory control panel, locate the 32-bit addressing button, and click it on. If you have a Mac such as a IIcx that doesn't support 32-bit addressing you'll need to download a copy of Mode32, a control panel that makes these older machines "32-bit clean" and adds the 32-bit addressing option to the Memory control panel. (TipWorld)
Sometimes errors in your system defy analysis: Fonts change unexpectedly, your trash warning comes back, icons move. The information in PRAM could be mucked up. We've told you how to fix that already. Finder preferences such as fonts and the trash warning are determined by the finder preferences file, not by PRAM. What you have to do is trash the finder preferences file in the preferences folder, empty the trash, then restart, and the finder will make a new preference file. Your settings will probably be saved from then on.
