WOW! Sometimes you can't win no matter what you do. I apologize for a very poor performance at the January meeting, and especially for the missing disks. Those who purchased anyway should already have their disks through the mail. Check in at the table this month for last month's disks and, of course, the excellent disk below, put together by Owen Saxton, your friendly cash handler.
A note: The two icons for the AD modules did not come from the AD modules - I got them from a package called "Cool Icons". Sometimes I supply icons when the item has only generic ones.
Another note: We help Ilana Braun update the shareware on the membership disks from time to time. You might visit our table to get a list to see if you have all the latest goodies we now provide to each new member.
ADB Prober 1.00
ADB Prober is a small program that displays all devices connected
to the ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) and identifies them. It is also
possible to re-scan the bus and to reset it. For techies and experts,
ADB Prober also supports continuously polling ('monitoring') and
trigger-polling (waiting for signal) of a specific device. Freeware.
BBEdit Lite 3.5.1
BBEdit Lite is a freeware derivative of BBEdit 3.5, the popular and
critically acclaimed text editor for programmers, HTML authors,
on-line-service users, and anyone else who needs to edit plain-text
files. Its features include the use of stationery documents, the
ability to open several files at once, powerful multi-file search
(and replace) functionality, and high performance. Freeware.
Eric's Bookmarks 1.4
Eric's Bookmarks are Netscape Bookmarks designed to make it easy for
you to get on the Internet and navigate your way around. They provide
useful links to different computer companies, software archives,
places of entertainment, shopping outlets, news and even reference
materials. Freeware.
Font O'Matic 1.0.5
Font O¹Matic 1.0.5 will help you keep track of what your fonts
look like. It displays a paragraph of sample text in any currently
installed font. The font to be viewed is selectable in any order via
a pop-up menu, or sequentially by using the space bar. Shareware fee
$10.
Greg's Browser 2.5.4
Greg's Browser provides an alternative to the Finder for manipulating
files. It lets you simultaneously see the contents of a folder, its
parent and a subfolder, providing a quick and easy way of moving both
up and down through the folder hierarchy. It can open Stuffit
and Compact Pro archives and uses Macintosh Drag and Drop for
inter-application dragging. Shareware fee $20.
HoverBar 1.2.7
HoverBar keeps icons and clipboard data at your fingertips by storing
them on bars that float over everything, no matter what program you
are using. You can create two types of bars: icon bars that store the
icons of files, folders and programs (including all currently running
ones) for quick access; and clip bars that behave as a drag and drop
clipboard. Shareware fee $5.
Jeremy's CS Modules 1.5.1
Jeremy's control strip modules work either on Apple's control strip
or the shareware program Desktop Strip. Some of them are direct
replacements for those provided by Apple, but with more options and
functionality; and some of them are unique. They are Clock, Sound
Volume, Sleep, Battery Time, CPU Speed, Battery, Temperature,
AppleTalk and Application. Shareware fee $10.
Luna
Luna is an After Dark (or Darkside) screen saver module that puts the
moon on your screen, just the way it looks outside your window (but
with greater magnification). Freeware.
Mazin' Shapes 1.4
Mazin' Shapes is an After Dark (or Darkside) screen saver module that
draws a huge variety of stunning patterns on your screen, using a
simple pair of formulae. Freeware.
Orniwell 2.0
Orniwell is a text viewer that allows you to look at big text files
(i.e. files of type TEXT and ttro) very quickly. It also allows you
to search for a text string and move quickly between occurrences of
it. File may be printed as well. Shareware fee $16.
RealView 2.0.2
Realview displays the data fork of any file either as text, with line
breaks inserted, or as a combination of ASCII and hexadecimal. Its
output may be selected and copied to the clipboard, making it useful
for the extraction of text from any type of file. It also can save a
selection as a file, or print a file. Shareware fee $10.
Set Clock 3.6
Set Clock is used to set your Macintosh clock from one of several
dial-up time servers. It is accurate to within one second.
Freeware.
As discussed at the general meeting, We are holding a sort of flea market at the next general meeting, which uses the silent auction method to sell things. Here is how it works:
PLEASE NOTE: We will make every effort to keep your item secure. However we take no responsibility, and theft is your risk alone. We suggest you keep easily stolen items, like SIMM chips, with you and just leave the auction sheet.
Sorry, we cannot provide electrical power to demo hardware.
(If this looks suspiciously similar to January's Tip of the Month, that is because it IS. The TOM was omitted from the hard-copy newsletter so I am running it again. Sorry.)
Answer to December's Quiz: there are 10 ways to eject a floppy disk! Free DOM to whoever gets the most ways before the March general meeting. Offer only good for readers of this web page.
A little calculator magic:
If you have a large set of numbers to enter into the calculator and
do not want to make a mistake and have to start over, type the data
into a word processor or the note pad. Then copy the data you just
typed in and open the calculator from the Apple menu. Paste it into
the calculator and watch the buttons get pushed by themselves and
after a moment you'll have your answer.
Example:
2+2*6/2=
After you have an answer, you can then copy the answer and paste it into your document. There is no need to select the answer. Just make sure the calculator is the active window and select copy.
With the calculator open, type E and the answer will be displayed in scientific notation. Remember that the calculator processes the arithmetic in the order in which you type it, not by the standard operator precedence rules: the expression in the example returns 12, not 8.

If you have a floppy that will not eject regardless of what you do,
grab a paper clip and straighten it out. Then insert it into the
small hole next the floppy disk slot. Push firmly and your floppy
should pop out. You can tell a veteran Mac user, he usually has
multiple mashed and bent paper clips strewn around his Mac.
If you would like to erase floppy disks as soon as you insert them, hold down the command-option-tab keys as you insert the disk. You will immediately see the dialog asking if you would like to erase the disk.

Since the Scrapbook provided by Apple in System 7.5 and above is now
an application, you can have multiple scrapbooks. But due to a
programming oversight, there is no open menu to open other
scrapbooks. Try doing this. Put your scrapbooks in a folder inside
the Apple Menu items folder. Now you can just select the scrapbook
you wish to open from the Finder or the Apple Menu.
Have you ever considered what exactly is disabled when you press and hold the shift key during the startup sequence of a Macintosh computer running System 7.x? A lot of people think that all of the extra items they have installed will be temporarily turned off, but that is not always the case.
Primary Effects
This is a list of the most important results of pressing and holding the shift key at startup. All of the following items are disabled:
Other Effects
This is a list of the secondary effects of pressing and holding the shift key at startup. These items will also be disabled.
The items mentioned in this article are not all of the items that
are disabled by pressing and holding the shift key during startup.
Some third-party software not listed here may also be disabled by
this action. On the other hand, many third-party software
applications are not disabled by this action. They use their own
"hot" keys to disable their software during startup. You will need to
contact the third-party vendor for more information.
If your icons are already in grid positions, however, they will not move. For instance, sometimes I move a bunch of items into a new folder and when I open the window, all the icons are exactly on top of each other. Here is a trick: Select all (command-A). Then move the icons just a teeny bit. Then Clean up Window. Whammo! All the icons spread out to unoccupied grid positions. (In the Views control panel you can specify square grid or staggered grid - the latter saves much space). Even if your icons look OK, check that the number of icons you see matches the number in the window header. If not, one of them is hiding - do the trick above to chase it out.
You can also alphabetize when you clean up the window: Just hold
down the option key and the Clean up Window menu item becomes Clean
Up by Name. If you want to order by Date or Size, instead, first go
to the View menu (not the control panel) and select "by Date" or "by
Size". Then hold down option and select Clean up by Date or Clean up
by Size, which is what the Clean up item becomes. Afterward, go back
to View by icon.
