Book Carnival is a mystery and dark fantasy specialty book store that opened its doors 20 years ago in Orange, California. Pat and Ed Thomas are the original owners of Book Carnival who learned the book business from the ground floor up starting with a used, out-of-print bookstore heavy in mystery, dark suspense, science fiction and fantasy. Five years down the road, they moved to a smaller store and became the first bookstore to specialize in mystery and dark fantasy in Orange County California. Pat began to court the publishers and convinced them that Orange County did read mysteries and dark fantasy. Thus began the journey into author signings, which today number an average of 80 authors a year.
Thanks to our customers, we have the best job in town. Ed with his knowledge and love for books and Pat who runs the back office and author signings are going into the new millennium with the best of both worlds -- an open store and this new fangled thing called the Internet and World Wide Web.
On May 1, 2003, Ed and Pat proudly accepted the Raven Award for their contributions to the mystery field.
In 1989, Dean Koontz dedicated "MIDNIGHT" to Ed and Pat Thomas. The dedication reads:
"To Ed and Pat of Book Carnival who are such nice people that sometimes I suspect they're not really human but aliens from another better world."
