The maiden launch of the new Delta 4 rocket lifts a European telecommunications satellite, Eutelsat W5, into orbit from Cape Canaveral. Liftoff occurred at 5:39 p.m. on 20 November 2002. Picture insets clockwise from lower left show the expectant crowd waiting, above that a surveillance helicopter checks things out, next the rocket sitting on the pad, then the moment of ignition, below that shows liftoff, and finally the smoking pad with the Delta 4 long gone.
