CAREER SUMMARY Bobby Abrahamson is a freelance photographer, documentary artist, and media educator with 18 years of professional experience
teaching and producing media. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, and is available for hire to shoot a wide variety of
assignments: editorial, weddings, portraits and public events.
Abrahamson's freelance clients include The New York Times, TIME, Fortune, US News & World Report, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Minneapolis Star Tribune, the advertising firm Wieden & Kennedy, and the PR firms Cohn & Wolf, Manning, Selvage & Lee, and Ketchum Public Relations. He is represented by the photo news agency Black Star. Bobby has worked as a assistant to renowned photographers Robert Frank, Eugene Richards and James Nachtwey. Abrahamson's work as an artist has been presented in six solo shows and numerous group exhibitions in the United States and Europe. An exhibit of his "Recent Composites" was recently shown at The Hillman Photography Center at Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland). In February 2005 Bobby published his first book of photographs entitled "One Summer Across America." This work was presented in a solo show at Photography Center of Atlanta (April 2005). Recent group exhibitions include "Light Leak" at Newspace Center for Photography (Portland, 2006), "As they see it: Georgia Photographers" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia (2005), "The Yugoslav Biennial of Young Artists" (Serbia and Montenegro, 2004), and the "Georgia International Festival of Art in Tbilisi" (Republic of Georgia, 2004). His film and video credits include: "One Summer Across America" (2003), "Little Boy Bobby" (1999), "Dreams and Despair" (1998), and "New York" (1995). His photographs are included in the collections of several major museums and numerous private collectors. Abrahamson's work as a media educator includes current positions serving as director and teacher for the Our Voices documentary photography program of The Pangaea Project (an overseas service learning project working with at-risk teens), teaching black and white photography at P:EAR (an organization that serves homeless and transitional youth), leading photography workshops for youths at the Portland Art Museum and Saturday Academy, and teaching documentary photography classes for adults at Pacific Northwest College of Art and at Newspace Center for Photography. Recent positions include teaching black and white photography to high school students at Northwest Academy (spring 2006), teaching photography through Caldera (working with at-risk youth; spring & summer 2006), and teaching digital photography to low-income children at Kellogg Middle School (2005-6). Before moving to Portland, Bobby served as founder, director and instructor for the Our Voices photography project of the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless (Atlanta, 2004-5), teaching traditional black and white photography to homeless and transitional adults. Other work as an educator includes teaching digital photography to abused and neglected teenagers at The Bridge (a residential treatment facility in Atlanta, 2005); teaching digital photography to elementary school students in an after-school program at The Davis Academy (Atlanta, 2004); leading a one-month photojournalism workshop at Studio Sepia in the Republic of Georgia (an appointment supported by the U.S. Department of State, 2004); teaching traditional black and white photography to middle and high school students in an after-school program at School of the Future (New York City, 2004); teaching a course on the Ethics of Photojournalism at the International Center of Photography (New York City, 2004); and teaching art and photography to teenagers at Camp KidsmART of The Rockaway Artists Alliance (New York City, 2003). Bobby served as an adjunct instructor of photojournalism for three semesters at the University of Georgia's College of Journalism in Athens, Ga. (2000-01). Abrahamson has a Master of Arts degree in Media Studies from New School University, with a focus on documentary photography and film history, theory, criticism, production and education. |
