5. Ralph Capers2 Alsobrook (sr) (William M. or S.1) was born in Oak Grove, Carroll, Louisiana November 5, 1860. Searching the 1860 Census index shows a William S Alsobrook being in "Carroll Parish, Louisiana". Assuming the S was a transcription error, I checked Carroll Parish and determined it is the correct birthplace for Ralph and his siblings. 1900 FEDERAL CENSUS, PIKE COUNTY, ARKANSAS Page 95A HSD/FAM: 88/ 88, in Township: Thompson : Alsobrook, Ralph C. ,H,W,M,NOV 1860,39,M,15,LA,TN,TN. The LA in that listing is Ralph's own birth place. The exact date of November 5, 1860 comes from Martha Bloodworth, granddaughter of John Baxton Alsobrook, Ralph's son. For those who care to know, eventually Carroll Parish was divided and in 1999 there is both an East Carroll Parish and a West Carroll Parish and they are in the extreme NE corner of Louisiana. The parish seat for West Carroll is Oak Grove.

Ralph died August 21, 1933 in Panther Chapel Community, Franklin County, Texas, at 72 years of age. FamilySearch® Ancestral File states Ralph Capers Alsobrook died August, 1933 in Talco and is buried there. Martha Bloodworth agrees with the date, but not the place. She has him having died August 21, 1933 and says that he died of "urmia, secondary heart and kidneys" at 11:15 p.m. in the home of his son, Jewel Fuller Alsobrook. He is buried in Talco, which is probably where the confusion about Talco came from. On his birth certificate Martha wrote down that it lists his father as Ralph and his mother as Sue Ann Snow Alsobrook, but she did this while in college and admits it may be in error. Fern Allen Alsobrook has the death date down as August 22, 1933 and copied it from his grave marker, which she visited in 1997. His body was interred August 23-24, 1933 Midway Cemetery. Place buried from Martha Bloodworth. From Fern Allen Alsobrook: "We visited his grave in November, 1997. He has a nice marker and we got the information from that grave so we'd have the correct dates for him. I also have some pictures of him that I will label and put in the family history." According to Jewel Fuller Alsobrook, Jr., his "Granpa Ralph" is buried in Midway Cemetery, at a rural church, not far from Sulphur Springs, Texas. Midway Cemetery is located northeast of Mt. Vernon across White Oak Creek. It is a well kept cemetery behind the Midway Church. It was probably started around 1900 since no tombstone was found dating before 1900.

Photocopy of the actual page from the Nevada County records book.

He married Mattie Victoria Daley-Dailey in Emmet, Nevada County, Arkansas, September 29, 1885. According to my photocopy of the marriage license sent for in September of 1999, R.C. Alsobrook (25) and Miss Mattie V. "Daily" (19) were married in Nevada County by George W. Logan. As was required, $100 was put up as security. This marriage was recorded in: "Nevada County Marriages 1871 - 1901", Bk C, pg 351.

Mattie was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas March 11, 1866. 1900 Pike County AR census gives Mattie's birthdate as being Mar 1866 and place as AR and the FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN: 56X2-JH gives the place as Hempstead County. Martha Scott Bloodworth found the exact birth date on Mattie's death certificate. Mattie was the daughter of George B. Daley-Dailey and Nancy Watson.

Mattie died July 22, 1951 in Talco, Titus County, Texas, at 85 years of age. Martha Bloodworth tells that Mattie lived with her mother's family when her mother was a little girl and died in their (John and Neader's) home and is buried in the Midway Cemetery in the Midway Community, Talco. She states that Mattie was blind. Martha has Mattie's eyeglasses.

At 20 years of age Mattie became the mother of Robert Lee Alsobrook (sr) in Emmet, Nevada County, Arkansas, June 15, 1886. According to FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN:88FQ-FF, Robert Lee was born June 15, 1896. This does not agree with the 1900 Pike County Arkansas Census which gives June 1886. There must be a typo in the Ancestral File because the 1900 Pike County census gives Jun 1886 as birthdate and AR as birth place. Later, Gladys Alsobrook gives the birth date as June 15, 1886. FamilySearch® International Genealogical Index #8815304 gives Robert Lee (sr) birthplace as Emmet, Nevada, Arkansas.

At 22 years of age Mattie became the mother of Hattie Victoria Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, February 28, 1889. 1900 Pike County census says she was born in Arkansas Feb, 1889 and is 11 years old. SSDI (Soc. Security Death Index) has a Hattie Keeling as having been born in Feb, 28, 1888 and having died July 1967 in Titus County, Texas. Not sure this is the same Hattie, but the month is the same and only a year off. Have not verified as of 7/99 so I'll go with the date of the SSDI and the year of the Census. FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN:88FQ-GL gives the place as Emmet, Pike, AR. Emmet is in Nevada County. FamilySearch® International Genealogical Index #8815304 gives the date as 28 Feb 1888, which agrees with their Ancestral File but not the 1900 Census.

At 25 years of age Mattie became the mother of Ethel Lillian Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, August 6, 1891. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Ethel's BD as August 1891 and BP as Arkansas.

At 27 years of age Mattie became the mother of John Baxton Alsobrook in Murfreesboro or Emmet, Pike County, Arkansas, February 12, 1894. 1900 Pike County AR census lists BD as 2/1894 and BP as AR. Martha Bloodworth, his granddaughter, narrowed it down to Murfreesboro. An obituary from Greenville Herald agrees. But Fern Allen Alsobrook thinks "Emmett, Pike County, AR" is correct, but the only Arkansas Emmet is in Nevada County.

At 30 years of age Mattie became the mother of Inez Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, November 12, 1896. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Inez as born 11/1896 and BP as Arkansas.

At 32 years of age Mattie became the mother of Dixie Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, January 12, 1899. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Dixie's BD as 9/1899 and BP as Arkansas. FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN:88FQ-K4 gives the full date and that Dixe was born in Emmett, Pike, AR. As stated earlier, there is no Emmett or Emmet in Pike County, but rather in Nevada County.

Mattie was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Thompson, Pike County, Arkansas. At 34 years of age Mattie became the mother of Ralph Cappers Alsobrook (jr) in Murfreesboro, Pike County, Arkansas, February 25, 1901. The only Ralph Alsobrook listed in SSDI, who died within 20 miles of where Artie Thomas Alsobrook (sr) claims he resided, was born February 25, 1901. His SS# was issued in Texas. But the FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN:88FQ-L9 gives the date as Feb. 22. 1901 and the place as Emmett, Pike, AR when Emmet is in Nevada County. Martha Bloodworth also has February 22, 1901 as the birth date. But Glenda Sue Alsobrook Barnett and June Ann Alsobrook Felix have always been led to believe that February 25, 1900 was his birthdate, Glenda says because of a date found in a family Bible years ago. Glenda Sue is also who gives the place as Murfreesboro.

At 37 years of age Mattie became the mother of Mattie F Alsobrook November 8, 1903 or 1907. I don't remember where the 1903 came from but Fern Allen Alsobrook has the same date but the year as 1907.

At 40 years of age Mattie became the mother of Pearl Ruth Alsobrook Sherman, Grayson Co, Texas, March, 15 1906. Pearl was not listed in 1900 Pike County AR census. The date 3/15/06 and Sherman TX from Murnice Gandy (Tyler, Texas) sent to Rosalyn Alsobrook July, 1999.

At 42 years of age Mattie became the mother of Jewel Fuller Alsobrook (sr) in Savoy, Fannin County, Texas, September 8, 1908. Occupation: Housewife. Murnice Gandy gave Mattie's last name as "Dailey". Later, though I found it listed in the FamilySearch® Ancestral File as "Daley". Later still, I found it listed as Dailey in the 1880 Nevada County census but in the family bible it is spelled "Daley". B may stand for Baxton or Baxter according to Cody Daley.

A census listed Ralph as head of household in Carroll Parish, Louisiana, 1870. From 1870 Carroll Parish LA census records: Ann Alsobrook, 38, is now head of the house with 500/528 in property. It lists her as born in Tenn again. Children in her house include: 1-Anne E. 17 b. LA 2-William R. 13 b. LA 3-RALPH 9 b. LA 4-Mary 7 b. LA

Ralph was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census. Transcription of the 1880 census, page 402, Garland Twp, Hempstead County, AR reads: Ralph C. Alsobrook 29 farmer b. LA, father b. SC, mother b. TN Ann 48 mother TN TN TN William R. 24 brother LA SC TN The 29 must be a mistake by the transcriber or the census taker since Ralph would be 19 according to his birthdate in the 1900 census. William R's age is correct as is Ann's.

At 25 years of age Ralph became the father of Robert Lee Alsobrook (sr) in Emmet, Nevada County, Arkansas, June 15, 1886.

At 28 years of age Ralph became the father of Hattie Victoria Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, February 28, 1889. 1900 Pike County census says she was born in Arkansas Feb, 1889 and is 11 years old.

At 30 years of age Ralph became the father of Ethel Lillian Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, August 6, 1891. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Ethel's BD as August 1891 and BP as Arkansas.

At 33 years of age Ralph became the father of John Baxton Alsobrook in Murfreesboro or Emmet, Pike County, Arkansas, February 12, 1894. 1900 Pike County AR census lists BD as 2/1894 and BP as AR.

At 36 years of age Ralph became the father of Inez Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, November 12, 1896. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Inez as born 11/1896 and BP as Arkansas.

Ralph purchased land in January 21, 1897 in (Camden Office) Pike County, Arkansas. According to the Arkansas Land Records on rootsweb (Internet site), Ralph was the Patentee Name for 160 acres in 1897 in sec 18, twp 8S, Rng 24W. Document number 8120. For those who care to know, Pike County, Arkansas originated from Clark and Hempstead counties by an act of the Arkansas Territorial Legislature passed on November 1, 1833. A log courthouse and a small frame building for the clerk's office were erected and in October 1834 the county commissioners reported a house ready for the reception of the court "in the town of Murfreesboro the county seat of Pike County. Pike county in 1999 is in the center of the lower SW quadrant of the state. The land Ralph purchased was probably wooded, sloping, and likely contained a stream or was near one. Pike County is NW of Nevada County where Ralph and Mattie married, sharing a short common border.

At 38 years of age Ralph became the father of Dixie Alsobrook in Emmet, Arkansas, January 12, 1899. 1900 Pike County AR census lists Dixie's BD as 9/1899 and BP as Arkansas. FamilySearch® Ancestral File AFN:88FQ-K4 gives the full date and that Dixe was born in Emmett, Pike, AR. As stated earlier, there is no Emmett or Emmet in Pike County, but rather in Nevada County.

Ralph was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Thompson, Pike County, Arkansas. 1900 FEDERAL CENSUS, PIKE COUNTY, ARKANSAS Page 95A HSD/FAM: 88/ 88 Township: Thompson Alsobrook, Ralph C. At 40 years of age Ralph became the father of Ralph Cappers Alsobrook (jr) in Murfreesboro, Pike County, Arkansas, February 25, 1901.

At 43 years of age Ralph became the father of Mattie F Alsobrook November 8, 1903 or 1907. I don't remember where the 1903 came from but Fern Allen Alsobrook has the same date but the year as 1907.

At 45 years of age Ralph became the father of Pearl Ruth Alsobrook Sherman, Grayson Co, Texas, March, 15 1906. Pearl was not listed in 1900 Pike County AR census. The date 3/15/06 and Sherman TX from Murnice Gandy (Tyler, Texas) sent to Rosalyn Alsobrook July, 1999.

At 47 years of age Ralph became the father of Jewel Fuller Alsobrook (sr) in Savoy, Fannin County, Texas, September 8, 1908. Artie Thomas Alsobrook, Ralph's grandson, remembers having heard talk about a farm in Delta County, AR but there is no Delta County AR, just a Desha County right above Chicot. He also remembers that the family came to Texas in 1917. He doesn't recall mention of Louisiana. Murnice, though, has it that Pearl was born in 1906 in Sherman, Texas, which means Artie's 1917 date has to be wrong, too. Artie Thomas gives the following names as siblings of Ralph. Robert Lee (sr), Mattie, Pearl, Hattie, Jewel, John, Inez, Dixie, and Ralph Capus (jr) . Artie remembers Ralph Jr. as having died in Snyder, Texas and the one time he came to visit, two little girls were with him. Elsie's address 7/26/99 according to Artie: Elsie Mae Morrow 1089 PALM AVE SEASIDE CA 93955-4913 Phone number according to the Internet is (831) 394-1602 Elsie gives the name "Capers" for his middle name. Legal documents from Carroll Parish filed by his mother, Ann Alsobrook, agree with the Capers spelling. Later, Sue Barnett, daughter of Ralph C. Alsobrook, Jr. gives the name as "Cappers", so it appears somewhere along the way Ralph Jr. added another P to the name passed on to him by his father. FamilySearch® International Genealogical Index file #1903806 gives Ralph's place of birth as being "Grove P', Carroll, 'Arkansas" which doesn't agree with the 1900 Pike County AR Census, stating Louisiana is his birth state, therefore I was able to conclude it was Oak Grove, Carroll Parish, Louisiana where he was born, and where I was able to find records involving the family, including being there for the 1860 census just before Ralph is born..
