Lesson Plan
aphg7-8

Teaching Goals
  1. Learn that one can grow by the positive way we handle being criticized.
  2. Learn that one can gain the respect of others, by the positive way we handle being criticized.

Teacher Prep
Print the essay "How does One Handle Negative Criticism?" - - - negative.rtf
Make copies for all the students, plus a few spares.

Define teams of 3 students. Try to evenly match them as to academic ability and willingness to work. Write the names of each team member on an "Example of Criticism" sheet. Repeat for the other teams. Be sure to keep a record of team members, and the Version number of the "Example of Criticism" given to each group.

"Example of Criticism", for class work. - - - critical.htm - - - critical.rtf
Because the web page version will probably not print out with the several versions on different sheets, download critical.rtf and open it with your word processor. If you have to edit it to make a good copy, do so. Then print out all pages. There are several versions in the same document. You will need one version for each team of 3. You will likely need to assign a version to more than one team.

Class Time

Relevancy

As a human, you often do things for which you might be criticized. This is especially true when you are learning something new. Of course, you are supposed to be learning something new in school all the time! Because you are human and not perfect you can make mistakes while learning. You can even make mistakes after you have learned. It will happen all through your life.

Introduction

I'm going to change what we do with this essay from what we have done in the past.

Student Work

Give me examples of being criticized. They can be made up but realistic, something that happened to you, or something you saw happen. Please don't give any names. Hands?
Write responses on a view foil on screen.

Tell me what do some people likely think or feel when they are criticized? You don't have to tell us if you are talking about yourself. Hands? Record ideas on a blank transparency.

Can we think of different ways of thinking that could take most of the "sting" out of being criticized?
Record ideas on a blank transparency.

Presentation

We can let criticism hurt us, and destroy our relationship with the person who criticizes us, or we can learn and grow from it. With careful control of our own attitude, we don't have to be hurt when someone needs to correct or criticize us. Instead, we can use criticism to become a better person. If we can do that we will be happier.
