Good Habits for Studying
Lesson Plan
aphg6-9

Teaching Goals
  1. Doing the Homework assignments is not studying.
  2. Define the generalized goal for self-study: to learn the material for lifelong use.
  3. The purpose of tests = measure mastery. Passing them is not the goal.
  4. How the mind works if the goal is short term; that is, to "pass the next test".
  5. Techniques for study.

Relevance of Studying

IF:

you really do want to be a high quality person,

ANDIF:

you want to be capable,

ANDIF:

you want to be respected by other people,

THEN:

you need to acquire knowledge and develop skills.

Introduction

Parents and teachers don't set about to make your life miserable or difficult. If there were a computer connector on the side of your head, then we could plug you into a big computer and download the stuff you need to learn. You don't have a port connector, so you have to learn things the old fashion way: by making significant effort to study, to understand what you study, learn how to use what you studied, and remember it.

Presentation

Pass out the essay "Good Habits for Studying"

This paper being handed out is an essay about study habits. Starting as soon as you get it, carefully read it completely through. I want you to take notes of only important stuff on a separate sheet of paper. When you are finished, turn the essay face down. When everyone is done, then I will call on individuals to answer questions about it. You will leave your essay paper face down unless I tell you individually to reread it. During the discussion, you may look at your notes.

Class Discussion

Use Directed Questions. Choose mostly students who you feel are in need of learning this material. Use a lot of follow-up questions to other students and class voting. Use student participation record.

If a student is not able to answer satisfactorily, tell him to reread the essay to find the answer, and to raise his hand when it has been found. Proceed with other questions and other students while he is doing that.

What is your only true goal you are reaching for when you study? To learn that material for lifelong use.

Is doing a homework assignment the same as studying? No.

What purpose does homework have? Why do you do it? It is practicing what you have learned.

Why is studying to get an "A" on the next test bad? Because it is a short-term goal, you mind will not make the effort to learn it for life.

How do you get an "A" on a test? By carefully learning the martial for lifelong use. The A is a byproduct of that study.

Why does it help to have the goal of "learning for life"? Because your mind will then do it's best to learn for life.

Tell me how you and a friend might help each other study. Quiz each other, pretending you are teacher.

How will you know if you have mastered everything that you think you should know? Check them off on a list.

What should you do if you become confused or have difficulty while studying? Ask for help.

Who might you ask for help? Another student, family member, or teacher.

What should you do with returned papers? Got over them carefully. Read teacher's notes on your paper. If you had mistakes, study that material some more. When done, you should be able to take that test or do that paper again, and get 100%

True or false: If you have had something on a test, you will never have it on another test. False!

One day you were given a class lecture, and have homework to do on that material. When you get home, and start working, tell me how you proceed.
  1. Study the material you received in class, and the notes you took.
  2. Work on the assignment
  3. If you have trouble, go back to the study materials to find help.
  4. When done with assignment, go back and reread all your study materials and notes. As you do that, try to see how everything in your assignment relates to the study material.
  5. Think for a few minutes about how you might have to use this knowledge in your future. I.e., "What is it good for?"
  6. A short time before the test, go back and review everything.

Why is it bad to leave most of your study until just before the test? Because something might happen at the last minute that prevents you from studying. Then it is too late.

Teacher Follow-up

Choose a poor performing student. Privately ask how s/he will be approaching the homework assignment. S/He should give the sequence of 6 steps given just above. If not, reinforce them.
