Relevance

Note taking is an important Life-Skill. I write from long experience.

Note taking will help you master work in school. Mastering school work will give you better tools to use throughout your life. You will become more capable! You will get better grades for less effort, and remember what you learned.

In your future work, note taking will help you:

If you are a topnotch employee, you will not be likely to be fired or laid off in bad time the company may be having. Note taking helps.

Note taking will help in other activities you do, such as hobbies and groups you will belong to. It will help you earn the respect of other people, because you will come across as "having your act together."

Presentation

Today we will start learning how to take notes. We will start out as simple as possible. I will pass out a paper, "Taking notes". You are to follow along on it as I read it. You have two jobs as I read.

  1. You will try your best to understand the ideas you hear.
  2. You will try to pick out those things for which I give you clues. As I read I may say something like "This is important." - OR - "Take note." If you hear something like that, you are to underline it or highlight it. Repeating something also indicates it is important!

You will keep this paper. Review it a few times. Take its contents seriously. It can really help you in your school life, and after. In the weeks ahead, we will do more note taking. Learn this now, so you will have it locked into your head and can use it when you need it.

"When I have finished, I will call on some of you and ask what you marked.

READ THE ESSAY "Taking Notes"

Ask several individuals "What is the first thing you marked?"

Ask the whole class "Did anyone marked something ahead of that?"

Ask several people "What should be the second thing marked, Etc."

Ask all the class "Did we miss anything?"

Project "Taking Notes (Answers)" showing the answers large and bolded. (tak-nota.htm or .rtf)

A teacher or leader will often emphasize important words or ideas. I am going to read another very short essay. This time I want you to listen for words or phrases that I emphasize, or give a bit of verbal punch to. You are to mark those you hear. I will ask some of you what you marked."

Read essay "Good morning"

"From your notes answer these questions:

  1. Ask several people: "Why did I call you Ladies and Gentlemen?"
    • To remind you that is what you should be working towards.
  2. Ask several people: "What did I say was your goal?
    • Your Goal is to do good in the world!
  3. Ask several people: "What does the phrase Ladies and Gentlemen indicate about you?"
    • You are educated, refined, polite, respectful, and very capable persons.

Did anyone take any other notes?" If yes, ask them what, and why?

Project my version of the essay (with the important parts large and bolded). (gdmornin.htm or gdmornin.rtf)
