Introduction
None. Read the essay cold.
Presentation
You are to practice note taking on the handout. After reading this essay to you, I will pick some of you to answer questions about it.
Read the essay, "Stealing Time."
Discussion
Ask several students to answer these questions. (If you get a smart aleck remark, say something like "I am so sorry to see that you are making choices that lead towards failing in life."
How would you describe the person who ate your food? - - - A thiefWhy is disrupting the class stealing from students? What is being stolen? Because it means the other students get less education than was paid for.
How does disruption steal from all of the parents of all the students? They have paid for their children's education, either directly or through taxes. When you disrupt class, it is just like the thief stealing food from your plate. The education was paid for, but never received.
Is it OK to disrupt class because you are bored? No. Of course not!
Is stealing time a moral, or an immoral thing to do? An immoral act.
What do you think your grandmother would say if she saw you messing up by horsing around during class?
What would you think about a student who is always clowning around in class? Would you like it? (Ask several good students.)
Relevancy
We want other people to respect us. One of the best ways is to respect them first. If you clown around in class, you will loose respect from me, and from other students. They don't like to have their time wasted! If you realize that you are taking away something of value from your fellow students, your self-respect should be less.
If you disrupt class, you are reducing the total quality of your future life. You do this by reducing your mastery of whatever is being taught at that time. In a very real sense, you are stealing a tiny bit of your future, and the futures of the other students.
By doing things that disrupt the class, you may gain some attention for the moment. But you loose respect from others. You also reduce your own abilities.
When you find you have a student who is at that moment disrupting the class, go over to him or her and at close range say:
"<Billy>, why are you stealing education from <Mary, John, Jill,> and all of the rest of the class? Please stand up and tell them why!
OR
"Is getting attention by disruption worth losing the respect of most of the people in this room?" If the answer is yes, then say, "I am so sorry to see that you are making a choice that leads towards failure." and immediately go on with the lesson.
