TRANSPORTATION TO, FROM, AND AROUND BLYTHE

ROAD NETWORK

Blythe is a ground transportation hub. The most important increment of our road network is the I-10 freeway. It is one of the main east west arteries in the United States. Originating in Santa Monica, a seaside suburb of Los Angeles, and spanning the continent before terminating at Jacksonville, on the east coast of Florida. Blythe's unique location makes it an almost mandatory fuel and food stop for vehicles traveling in either direction. Over 9,000,000 million cars and trucks pass through Blythe, on I-10, each year.

Commencing in Blythe and terminating near Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, US Highway 95, from north to south, also spans the entire nation. Las Vegas, Reno, Boise, Lewiston, and Sandpoint are cities US95 either passes through or adjacent to.

California Highway 78 begins at the beach in Oceanside, California near San Diego. It proceeds through Escondido to picturesque Julian, California in the moutainous Cleveland National Forest. This scenic California highway then drops into the desert, emerging from the Vallecito Mountains on the coast of the Salton Sea. After passing through Brawley it turns northeast and finally ends at Hobsonway in Blythe.

The Palo Verde Valley Transit Agency operates a fleet of modern, air conditioned coaches on several regularly scheduled routes throughout our valley. In addition to serving the City Of Blythe routes also serve the college on the nearby mesa, extend into Ehrenberg, Arizona, and connect to Quartzsite, Arizona twenty-two miles east on I-10. The city is served by coaches that emulate street cars of the 1930s and 40s. All are air conditioned, offer bicycle racks, and ramps and lifts for the disabled. The local fare is $1.00, and seniors and the disabled can ride for fifty cents.

AIR TRANSPORTATION

During the early hectic days of World War II the federal government built many new military installations. Among those was the Blythe Army Airfield. It was created with long runways and heavy threshholds to accomodate the training of B-17 and B24 heavy bomber pilots. The Blythe Army Airfield is today the Blythe Municipal Airport. Its runway 17/35 is 5,280 feet long and 100 feet wide. It has a double wheel tandem rating of 130,000 pounds. Runway 8/26 is 6,562 feet long and 150 feet wide. Its double wheel tandem rating is 300,000 pounds. This general aviation facility offers both tiedowns and hanger parking. Major airframe and powerplant service is offered, and fuel is available. The airport averages 67 aircraft operations each day.
