Anna Bellamy's father was a machinist and her mother was a career military woman who died due to complications of Anna's birth.  Due to the loss, her father became an abusive drunk.  Anna's genetic structure compensated for the beatings by giving her a near invulnerability.

While walking his daughter to school, a local hero spotted Anna's amazing resilience when the girl was struck by a car and got up like nothing happened.  Already transfixed by the tales in her friend's comic books, after hearing a conversation between students about how people like Uncle Slam were "dinosaur" heroes, she realized that people today had no role models their own age.  Donning a patriotic outfit (ala Uncle Slam, and one of her comic book heroes, Captain America), Anna took to the street to fight crime under the code name ANTHEM.
