FLOIE BARROWS

Hi! I'm Floie Barrows. I live in the small desert community of Blythe in southeastern California's Palo Verde Valley. It straddles the boundary of the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. Those living south of the I-10 being in the Sonoran Desert and those north in the Mojave Desert. Blythe is isolated. The nearest town of any size is Indio, about 100 miles west. It is rumored that occasionally the weather here is a little warm. Well, don't you believe it! I've been here since 1960, and it's only been over 130 degrees twice in all those years. Since coming here, it has also snowed the same number of times. Check out the "BLYTHE" link below, and learn more about our beautiful desert from the Blythe Area Chamber Of Commerce.

I have three purposes in creating a personal homepage. First, I want to see if I can do it, and if so, how well I can do it. Second, I'm going to tell a bit about my family, friends, and personal interests. It is, after all, my personal homepage. Finally third, I'd like to put something about where I live on the web. Blythe isn't well known. Except for the summer weather reports, most people have never heard of it. In addition to frequently being the hottest place in the nation, there's a lot of great "stuff" here. I'd like to put information about that in one place, this website, so that it can be more easily found and used by others.

If you decide to journey through my website, when you're finished you'll know about much, but not all, of what makes the California Desert, and especially the Palo Verde Valley a great place to visit, work, and live in. Bon voyage!

I was a member of the Kiwanis Club Of Blythe for over twenty years. Kiwanis is a great service club. They focus mostly on serving local children and youth, but can be found helping wherever and whoever needs them. If you'd like to help your community become a better place to live, look for your local Kiwanis Club. They'll want to talk with you about the benefits of Kiwanis membership. You can visit Kiwanis International's website by using the Kiwanis link below.

My first telescope was made at the age of twelve. For anyone really curious, it was a four inch Newtonian Reflector, and was constructed from pipe fittings and a few old airplane parts. It served many years, and perhaps somewhere, is still probing the universe. Now, over half a century later, my interest in astronomy still lives. My current scope is larger and more sophisticated. When you're talking about telescopes, size, we call it aperture, and it refers to diameter, not magnification or power, is very important. It's computer controlled, and accesses data from my PC. Hit the "ASTRONOMY" link to learn more about this fascinating hobby from the website of The Colorado River Astronomy Club here in Blythe. Other hobbies include reading, book collecting, and microscopy. For more about collecting books, please click on my image above.

Incidently, if you're looking for a place to start a business, think about Blythe. We're on the California/Arizona border, about ninety miles north of Mexico. Blythe is in the NAFTA Trade Zone. The Colorado River flows from north to south through our valley, and over 9,000,000 vehicles each year go through Blythe on an east west axis past our six I-10 offramps. Because of the valley's unique location, midway between Los Angeles and Phoenix, nearly all of those vehicles stop here. You could be living in the beautiful pollution free California Desert, boating or fishing every weekend on the scenic Colorado River, and doing business with friendly customers in a very profitable market. For additional business oriented information relating to the Blythe area, please click on the Palo Verde Valley Economic Development link just below.

Need a search engine? There's a link to Hot Bot just below. Then please go to my next page and click on a few pictures from around our valley. The site navigator is at the top of this page.
