Jack Helms was one of the best players of the Kotys inaugural 1952 season. He played halfback and writes:
"Hello Bill. Got your address from your family page and was put on to it from the Ching Tang page. Unfortunately I only played for your father for spring practice and the football year of 1952 but he made lasting impressions on me for- ever and I respect him greatly. He did two thing which I vividly remember. Our opening game against Edison in the Orange Bowl was his first official game at Gables. I had the misfortune of fumbling not once but twice in the first half. At half time, we didn't know what to expect from him and we were also behind in score so we waited with great anticipation. He delayed his entrance for a good five minutes and no one said a word including the assistant coaches during this time. He finally burst through the door at a fast pace, stopped and looked around and finally found who he was looking for . . . Me. He looked at me with a scowl on his face and said, "Helms, if you fumble again I will make a guard out of you." I never fumbled again in my life. The other incident was in practice when he told Joe Atwood to turn in his gear and leave the premises for talking back. We were shocked because Joe was a premier player on our defense. We couldn't believe it and it taught all of us that none of us were above the team. Joe was reinstated the next day after he apologized but the message was received by all. Good luck to you and your family Bill. Nice to know nice people. Jack Helms"
