Yosemite NP

Backpacking

Yosemite NP - Waterwheel Falls 96
August 96
Darryl, his family, Rob and Leanna, joined me in a hike to Waterwheel falls. It was a return trip for me. However, this time we went in on another trail. This year was dramatically different in the landscapes. There was still above average waterflow from the snowpack but levels were down as much as six feet from 1995.

Yosemite NP - Upper Pines
October 18-20, 1996
It was the first time in all my autumn trips that we encountered rain. Oh, and it was the first time we actually encountered bears in the valley. First of all it rained Friday afternoon, we were fortunate to get camp set up dry. It let up for a while, but with night fall it rain HARD. About 3 am it stopped but then bears. It took about 45 minutes for some of the guys in neighboring camps to shoo them away. At their closest, the big one was not more than 25 feet from my tent. What got me out of bed was the remark "whose white truck is that?" I got up and inspected the Trooper and realized that the bears had been interested in the white pick up next to my truck. They had done no damage but had gotten into the ice chest in the bed of the truck.

In camp the next night was a little bear, very inexperienced. After hearing noises, I poked my head outside my tent and, not more than 10 feet away was this little bear. I whistled and told him to scram. He did and didn't return, leaving behind some beans on the ground. An older bear wouldn't have left so easy or would have come back. Gracing me with their presense on this trip were Carol, Carl, Sharon, Emilly and Todd.
