End of Year Meeting
August 26, 2009
The meeting was held at Yvonne Gluck’s house and was very well attended. The following golfers were present: Sharon
Abbott, Shirley Barnes, Gloria Biczak, Kathy Blanchard, Pat Brandenberger, Gail Chaiken, Cindy Choate, Joanne Cohn, Dottie
Dexter, JoAnne Diller, Martha Eaton, Carolyn Ehrman, Yvonne Gluck, Ginny Halligan, Phyllis Hammett, Jean Holden, Vivian Howard,
Linda Munger, Gail Ramage, Cindy Schaeffer, Carolyn Stanhope, Mary Ellen Taggart, Sue Timperley, Elaine Tinker, Jan Tuck,
and Jan Wall.
The meeting was called to order at 5:40 pm by President Vivian Howard.
The Secretary’s Report was distributed by email and posted in the Ladies Room of the Bridgton Highlands Golf Course
prior to the meeting. The following were corrections made to the report: “the cost of joining the SMWGA is $30 and
$25 for each Tuesday tournament, with an additional $25 charge if the player wants to use a golf cart.” Also, JoAnne
Diller was the member who was organizing the LPGA and Girl Scout program for the course. With the corrections noted, the
Secretary’s Report was accepted, seconded, and approved by those members present.
Treasurer’s Report will be presented at a later time as Kathy was working and had not arrived when the agenda called
for the report.
Old Business
Speed of Play – Vivian thanked all for the improvement in completing rounds in a more timely fashion.
Tenth Hole Garden- Phyllis Bachand is responsible for the gardens throughout the course. She has hired Mrs. Lastra to care
for the plantings. To close the gardens for the seasons, the cost will be some of the plantings. For the 2010 Season, to
open and close, the cost will be $100 for the Tenth Hole Garden. The garden was originally planted by Joan Pesola and other
golfer-gardeners.
Junior Golf Program - Vivian reminded us about donating our old golf clubs to the program. The only cost to us would be the
cost of the grips. Bridgton Highlands would pay for the regripping, and Quinn Allen has donated his services of cutting down
the clubs to the proper length. JoAnne Diller reported that there was a two-day golf clinic for girls seven and older held
this season. Ten girls attended.
Vivian mentioned that the Rick Worthley Tournament helps support the Junior Golf Program. Linda mentioned that the Junior
Golf Program would be free of charge during the 2010 Season thanks to the generosity of Shirley McIver who will fund the program
for the season.
New Business
Club Championship Tournament – JoAnne Diller made a motion that the tournament be decided for Flights A and B by playing
18 holes, the same as the Championship flight. After much discussion, JoAnne Diller withdrew her motion. Phyllis Hammett
then made a motion that the decision be referred to the Tournament Committee. This motion was passed. Discussion ensued
about the possibility that a player who wins a flight should move up to the higher flight the next year, as is done in the
Men’s League. This was also deferred to the Tournament Committee.
The President’s Cup – The President’s Cup competition will begin on July 5th for the 2010 Season. This
year, the tournament was completed in a timely fashion with anyone not able to play a match within two weeks giving her opponent
a bye.
Treasurer’s Report - Kathy Blanchard gave the Treasurer’s Report. At the start of the season, the Association
had $836.59, and the current balance as of August 26th is $1601.09. This figure does not include any of the recent expenditures
for the end of the year prizes. The Report was accepted as presented.
Dues – It was voted to keep the dues the same for the 2010 Season at $20 and the tournament fees at $5 each for the
Club Championship and President’s Cup Tournaments. Kathy mentioned that it was easier to collect dues and fees at the
same time.
Pat Brandenberger asked if one had to belong to GHIN to enter tournaments. Carolyn Stanhope said there was nothing in our
bylaws concerning GHIN and tournaments. It was discussed whether a player in tournaments on Wednesdays and special tournaments
need to belong to GHIN. Elaine Tinker said that she belonged to a different association that established handicaps. JoAnne
Diller mentioned that one should have an established handicap that is verifiable to enter tournaments. This issue was deferred
to the Tournament Committee. Mary Ellen suggested that the Tournament Committee be expanded considering the many issues to
be decided.
Nominating Committee – Jan Tuck presented the slate of officers for the 2010 Season: President – Vivian Howard,
Vice President – Yvonne Gluck, Secretary – Jan Wall, and Treasurer – Kathy Blanchard. She then asked for
nominations from the members. Hearing no new candidates, Sharon moved that the officers be accepted as presented. They were
unanimously accepted.
Braun Tournament – Vivian brought up that the Club would like us to consider combining the Scotch Foursome Braun Tournament
with the Wing Ding Tournament. This year, the Braun Tournament was cancelled due to the weather and lack of sufficient participants.
Linda asked whether the Braun format would be accepted by those playing the Wing Ding. No decision was made. Gail Chaiken
has agreed to chair the Wing Ding Tournament in 2010.
Wednesday Tournament – Vivian and Sue Timperley suggest that one of the Wednesday tournaments be a Bloody Mary Tournament.
Carolyn Stanhope said she would be willing to help organize it.
Wednesday Tournament Tee Times –The question centers around signing up for specific tee times ahead of the day of play
or waiting until Wednesday to determine the tee times. Sharon brought up the concern about what happens when a player is
not ready to tee off when it is her tee time . This topic was referred to the Tournament Committee.
Other business– Cindy Choate needs volunteers to spot on Holes 2, 3, and 16 for the WMSGA on Tuesday, September 9th.
Several ladies volunteered.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 PM by President Vivian Howard.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Munger, Secretary
