Well, I'm new to this list so I thought I'd give you all an introduction to myself. My name is Mike and I'm from boring old Ohio. My favorite bands inlcude: Babes in Toyland, Nirvana, 7 Year Bitch, L7, Lunachicks, Hole, Muffs, Wives, Foo Fighters, Cold Cold Hearts, Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Huggy Bear, and of course Sleater Kinney among many others I can't think of off the top of my head. I like reading magazines & fanzines and going to as many shows as I can. I like meeting new people and meeting members of bands which I do quite often. Well, I guess this is all for now. Later all. mike durian --------------- MESSAGE wordsandguitar.v001.n034.2 --------------- From: MN_STEIN@ACAD.FANDM.EDU Subject: Re: Digest wordsandguitar.v001.n033 Date: Sun, 05 Oct 1997 15:57:45 -0500 (EST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; CHARSET=US-ASCII hey, i've been lurking for a while and thought i'd say hi. name's melissa and i go to F&M in Lancaster, PA (in response to the post about others in the Pittsburg area...even though Lancaster is more in the Philly/Harrisburg area). He's the producer, mixer, engineer who produced CTD and DMO. He's also produced records by H2B and Excuse 17. Non-Sleater-Kinney bands he's worked with are Geraldine Fibbers, Unwound, Bikini Kill, Team Dresch, Blonde Redhead and a bunch of others. I have typed up the article and am willing to send it to anyone who wants it. It's about how he produces a record and helps bands maintain their own sound. He also talks about how he got into the business -- his early days running a radio show at Evergreen, which ran right after Donna Dresch's show. I found it really interesting, especially since he's worked with such good bands. --------------- MESSAGE wordsandguitar.v001.n034.5 --------------- From: Mademoiselle Rachel Subject: valley advocate article (fwd) Date: Sun, 5 Oct 1997 23:27:11 -0400 (EDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII This is part of an article about Veda Hille and the Scrappy Bitch Tour, which was Veda, Oh Susanna, and Kinnie Starr. I may not thought cuz I have a very small quota. -- rachel AFTER THE RIOT Scrappy Bitch Tour: hipper than Lilith Fair and full of fighting spirit By Michael Strohl Speaking about the status of riot grrrl in last year's anthology _Angry Women In Rock_, K Records co-owner Candice Pederson said: "Actually, maybe what happens after a riot is what's most important to look at. Because a riot blows everything up -- but who's there picking up all the pieces?" Indeed, Pederson's comment cuts right to the heart of the current debate surrounding music made by women in today's girl-friendly pop milieu. While Meredith Brooks' summer hit "Bitch" proved that the revolution will be commodified, today's pop landscape is richer than ever with scrappy young women breaking through cages of convention, pushing past the limits of proscribed femininity and finding new possibilities in riot grrrl's model of rowdy feminism. There's Sleater-Kinney singing about musical and actual agency, carving out a sound as awesome and overwhelming as the desire it seeks to map; Helium's Mary Timony musing "Do you see your outline in the sky", her mammoth desire clearing away inner vistas as vast and unfathomable as the universe itself; Juliana Hatfield tapping into the monstrous force that is rock'n'roll to free the wild woman within, reveling in its ability to transform, make her want to go and fuck shit up. Despite its name, the Scrappy Bitch Tour, which comes to the Iron Horse Music Hall next Tuesday, has little to do with fucking shit up or getting rowdy. It's not about liberation through noise. Indebted to the huge success of this past summer's Lilith Fair, which laid claim to no other agenda than the celebration of women's voices, Scrappy Bitch promises to be more of a forum for sharing stories and trading thoughts, a dialogue between artist and audience mediated by songs. Ultimately, it's how a defiant spirit can reside in even the most familiar sounds. --------------- MESSAGE wordsandguitar.v001.n034.6 --------------- From: ELJC31B@prodigy.com (CAREN IN TOYLAND) Subject: Digest wordsandguitar.v001.n033 Date: Mon, 6 Oct 1997 07:36:40, -0500 Since a few of you guys like Kaia....can someone describe her sounds to me. I arrived at the show late, and my friend says to me "hey, theres a really cool bitch band on, you should go in".. hah, he sucks. So I went in to see there was only like 10-15 people in there.. they were all just standing around, not even moving, well there was this one boy who was moving his head a bit but thats all. it pissed me off, i shaked my ass a bit but didnt get too into it, the cool thing is that the band didnt really seem to mind no one was moving, they just kept playing and had a good time. i talked to the bassist/singer afterward and shes cool.... anyone else like them?.. if not, you should give em a listen oh, and when i talked to the bassist i asked her if she'd ever heard s-k and she said no, i told her to check em out... , Corinna *^*^*^*^*^*^*^* The Windows Of My Soul Are Made Of ~One Way Glass~ http://www.bluemarble.net/~cory/ani.html the mainstream is so polluted with lies, once you are wet it's so hard to get dry Ani DiFranco --------------- MESSAGE wordsandguitar.v001.n034.8 --------------- From: Moe Subject: Carrie, Corin and Janet kick MAJOR ASS (especially mine) Date: Mon, 06 Oct 1997 19:34:17 -0200 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi I don't usually say that I'm new blah blah, but as bgrrrl requested some posts, here I go: I am 35, live in France. Too bad I live so far from the two places they played at this weekend that I couldn't go :( I have been hearing of S-K on the net for nearly a year but it's only recently that I could get my hands on a S-K album. As of a few weeks now, Matador distributes "Dig Me Out" here. When I heard the first notes of DMO, I got this giant slap in the face and kick in the ass. I love their fast aggressive though melodic music and I *adore* the singing. I don't know who sings what, Carrie or Corin, sorry :( Can you tell me who sings on DMO, Words+Guitar and It's Enough for example so I can be a little less stupid afterwards. I also love the way they play the guitar. I know some ppl say that their earlier cds are better but sorry I can't see how this is possible ;> I'm not a drummer myself but it seems to me that Janet's drumming is sometimes unusual. For example in Words+Guitar during "i dream of quiet songs, i hear the silky sounds...", I *love* the way she kinda skips tempos. (I don't know if that makes sense.) What do the drummers on this list think? Anyone, anyone? Bueller? ;> Peace, Moe --------------- END wordsandguitar.v001.n034 --------------- @*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@* This list owned and maintained by bgrrrl.
