I totally agree with you that some songs may be catchy if you listen to it like a 1000 times or something, but let's face it, this album by no means sounds like any other Hole album and I should know being a huge Hole fan. I have like 40 Hole cds, so if that is any indication of how big of a Hole fan I was. But I have listened to the album a few more times since I posted the review on the Sleater-Kinney Digest, and well, I still do not like it. Especially track 2 called "Awful" and indeed it is. I mean starting out with lyrics like "Sweet Low Sweet Cherry". Ughh...................... >However, since my last review I have reconsidered some tracks to be okay, well sort of, such as track 6 "Dying". But still for the most part, the album sucks! >I realize Courtney idolizes Fleetwood Mac, but I think Fleetwood Mac is an incredible boring band. And I especially hate Stevie Nicks. She has not contributed to the great female influence hype contrary to belief. All Stevie does is put on exotic dresses to hide her probably fat body and then occasionally shakes the tamborine on stage. Well, so what!!!! She is lame!!! >And well, as for Billy, he has turned into a whiney puss also in search for some kind of celebrity status. >I was really so hoping this new Hole album would restore my faith in rock 'n' roll because lets face it, great albums coming out anymore are few and far between. So, when I heard the album, I was literally devastated. And it sounds as if you were too. So, you must admit, this is not a great rock album. Maybe it would sound better live ?! >As for the Spin feature, I realize you cannot believe everything you read, however, Courtney insisted that the interview be both audio and video taped; therefore, I would consider it to be fairly accurate. Given that, I certainly do not like what she has become. The article starts off by saying how she was hanging out with Al Gore. This was the first thing to blow me away. I do not like bands who hang out with political figures (i.e. Fleetwood Mac, etc), so this was my first tip off. Music is supposed to rebel politics (or at least in my opinion). Read the article, you will understand. All on the up, it really depicts her a shallow person, and of course, a huge back stabbing manipulator. Even before I read this article, that is one problem I always had with Courtney. She is constantly backstabbing people whom she is jealous of (i.e. PJ Harvey, Madonna, Alanis Morrissette). So, what really pisses me off is the fact that Courtney claims Alanis Morrissette makes horrible albums, well Courtney needs to take a listen to her new album "Sweet Low Sweet Cherry" (yikes!!!!ughh......). This new album almost makes you wish for an Alanis Morrissette album! At least Alanis does not sing "Sweet Low Sweet Cherry". I swear that lyric grosses me out. My Mom listened to it last night and even she thought it was bad. My Mom had even liked the album "Live Through This" for my Mom is a fan a huge fan of Janis Joplin (being that is more of her time period) and she thought Courtney and Hole's "Live Through This" was an excellent album album to the likes of her liking for Janis. However, she thought the new album was filled with cheesy lyrics and far too overproduced, not having the raw edge like "Live Through This" or something by Janis. >As for Patty, that one has devastated me. Patty is the one who often held the band together live for a few times I saw Hole in concert Courntey and Eric played very, very sloppy and Patty often got them back on track. Who cares if Patty likes drugs?! I would bet that lame ass Courtney is still privately doing them as we speak. Once again, she is backstabber. I think she would probably sell her daughter if she was promised to get a huge star lead in a movie in exchange for it. >My point being, I do agree with some of your thoughts, however, you must admit the first listen to "Celebrity Skin" did not blow you away, not like "Live Through This" did. So, if her old fans are not blown away, do you honestly think she is going to attract new ones? >Well, now I am going to have to wait for Sleater-Kinney's new one to restore my faith in my rock 'n' roll. And I am sure they will deliver!! >Thanks Again. >James > --------------- MESSAGE wordsandguitar.v001.n330.11 --------------- From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: NYC shows Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 11:24:15 -0400 (EDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII I just read about these in Time Out NY so I'm not sure if they're all correct. We only bought 1 copy between us as we all are pretty down on Courtney, but I guess we still had some hope that the album might be good, I mean we had been waiting for it for a long, long time.. It's probably the worst thing I've heard since I don't know when. I fully agree with James's comments about it, although I don't know if I really feel that "Playing Your Song" was any better than the others (but I guess it was more in keeping with Hole's older material). We only listened to it once & it was a total chore. The music was incredibly basic, the lyrics were like high school poetry, it was completely over-produced, and, let's face it, Courtney just can't sing all that well (well, she does a good job singing "angry", just not when she tries to sing "pretty"). Her voice got soooo monotonous we were going insane. Although I didn't read it, I understand that the album got an amazing review in Rolling Stone (4 stars, I believe). I really don't understand how that's possible, but then again, there's a lot of music that I don't understand how people can listen to it. This was the unanimous opinion of us all & we all used to be the hugest fans & thought Courtney, herself, was pretty amazing. We actually wore out our copies of "Pretty on the Inside", we listened to them so much. To be honest, though, over the past couple of years, we've been getting pretty down on Courtney for a variety of reasons & while we were all gathering technically to hack it to death, we all were holding out some hope that it'd be surprisingly amazing. Instead though, I actually felt physically ill at times listening to the new album & although I decided not to, I seriously considered getting rid of all my 7"'s & CDs of theirs I own. Anyway, I think I'm starting to ramble. I just thankful that I didn't shell out any cash for this, & I seriously advise everyone considering purchasing the album to go somewhere that has a listening station to preview it. It was worse than I ever could have possibly imagined. Despite my negative opinion of it though, I'm sure it'll still end up being a huge commercial success & she'll make loads more $$.
