On February 20, 1804, in Virginia, we find the marriage bond of William Holder and Margaret Peggy Routt. Peggy was the daughter of James Routt. She had previously married March 20, 1794, Shadrack Browning. It is not known to me how this marriage ended or if she had any children by Browning. The fact that she used the name Routt rather than Browning on the marriage bond indicated that she was not married to Browning very long.

I have a little time and I want to contribute some findings that have developed after many hours of laborious research. Perhaps it will stir some facts to the surface. I may have to do this in sessions so bear with me.
Johnston Co. NC
Many settlers came from Virginia or from the "Albemarle Country" that
lay in the northeastern NC just below the Virginia border and these
pioneers moved down a trail call, "Green's Path".
Name Green associated with earliest years of settlement in NC, moved from VA to NC before 1653.
Joseph Boon in 1739 received parcels of land on the north side of Neuse in what today's Johnstonians know as Boon Hill Township. Boon families migrating from Northampton County just below the VA border perhaps using Green's Path for their southward journey.
Researcher James P. Smith - a Smithfield Presbyterian minister who in
the 1930's and 1940's uncovered much valuable information concerning the
beginnings of Johnston County - wrote an article about Green's Path that
was published in the Smithfield Herald (reprinted in the History Section
of the Harvest Edition, August 1951). Having studied land records
as well as early
North Carolina maps, he concluded that Green's Path after entering
Johnston County from the north forded the Neuse River between what is now
the village of Wilson's Mills and the Town of Smithfield, crossed Swift
Creek south and west of the winding river, and continued southwestward
through the region that became Harnett County, ultimately reaching to the
upper PEE DEE RIVER in
SOUTH CAROLINA. Old maps of North Carolina show the path following
a course that does not veer many miles from HIghway 95 in our time...
Original Johnston Co., encompassed not only most of the elongated Neuse
River region rising northwest of New Bern but also extensive lands west
of the river's head waters stretching more than one hundred fifty miles
from the flatlands of the Coastal Plain in what is now Lenoir County (Kingston
area) to the elevations of the Piedmont in the part of North Carolina that
gave birth to Greensboro and Burlington in the nineteenth century.
From 1705 to 1746 this sprawling region having
no distinct western bounds as it reached toward the Appalachian Mountains,
lay under the jurisdiction of a governmental unit that took the name CRAVEN
County in 1712. Craven's land had been included in a precinct established
by Lords Proprietors who held title to North Carolina from 1663 to 1729
under a grant from the King of
England. New Bern, founded in 1710 by Swiss and German settlers,
became the Craven County seat of government, and it was the principal meeting
place of the colonial lawmaker many years before it was officially designated
as the colonial capital of North Carolina in 1766.
The Colonial Assembly sitting at New Bern
in 1746 noted, in adopting the act that established Johnston County, that
many inhabitants of Craven lived in regions "very remote from New Bern
Town" and encountered "difficulties and hardships not only in attending
the ordinary business" of the County Court (which exercised administrative
as well as judicial authority), but also in "being compelled to serve as
jurymen" and as witnesses at trials. The remedy for these irksome
conditions - a courthouse at Walnut Creek - was sufficient for only a dozen
years. The migrations of ... And Johnston, like its parent
CRAVEN, would surrender land repeatedly for convenient local government,
two of the early partitionings requiring courthouse relocations.
Gabriel Johnston governor of the royal province of NC for 18 years until 1752 Creation of Johnston and other new counties from 1746 to 1752 Orange created in 1752 Dobbs (now extinct to now which is Wayne Lenoir and Greene) After creation of Orange, Johnston still included much of the western land that in 1771 would become Wake County.

I also found that a John Holder and Joseph Holder married sisters named Polly and Molly Holder in Pittsylvania, Co., Va. In the late 1700s. I am at work and don't have the specifics with me. They witnessed each other's marriage and Spencer Holder also witnessed one of the marriages. There was a Laney listed in I think the 1787 Tithe list for Pittsylvania, Co., Va. There also was an older John Holder and Martha (Pigg?) in Pittsylvania Co., VA. There is also a John Holder and Martha in White CO. TN who die at the age of about 95 years.
I have a theory on this group.
My Theory goes like this:
John Holder and Martha of Pittsylvania Co., VA
have 4 sons, Spencer Holder, John Holder, Joseph Holder,
and Laney (Isaac) Holder. The whole family moves to White
CO., TN around 1800. Spencer Holder has a son named Spencer
Holder ( Holder's Station ) and the others have children,
but because they are not well known like Spencer, we don't really
at this time know who's was who's. The original John, Joseph and
Laney (Isaac) are too old to be my gggfather and his brothers or
cousins who eventually end up in Perry Co., TN. The deed
records would indicate that John and Joseph moved to Perry
Co. before Laney (Isaac) and bought land as later Laney (Isaac)
is deeded land from the two of them before he buys land from anyone
else in Perry Co. The White CO. TN deed record list from
the LDS does not give dates, but I have a copy of the deed TO Laney
(Isaac) H239 and it is dated 1832. The later deed FROM Laney (Isaac)
is dated 1837. It appears that the 3 sold out in White CO., TN and
moved to Perry Co, TN. I am sure you know that White
CO. TN is in the east and Perry Co., TN. is in the
west.
Also Part of the verbal story of our family is that my ggrandfather
Isaac Laney Holder ( son of Laney of Perry Co. TN)
and his brother John were both in the Civil War ( in Nathan Bedford
Forest's command from all indications).
Sometime after the end of the War, a group of men came riding into
John Holder's front yard, dismounted and dragged John from
the house and shot him dead. I have found no official records to substantiate
this story. He lived in Perry Co. TN, at the time.
Until later,
Laney Holder

I have John Holder's father, tentatively, until proven otherwise, Davis Holder.
John Holder & Clayborn Pigg both came from the Pittsylvania
Co., VA area and Davis Holder's children inter-married with
the Pigg family. In fact Clayborn Pigg married Ann Holder
in Maury Co., TN, which means more than John Holder
was traveling with the Pigg family. Then a son of Clayborn
Pigg and a daughter of John Holder married, becoming my direct
ancestors. I have been unable to determine the earlier wives of Clayborn
Pigg, except that he had 17 children, per census records prior to 1850,
before he married Ann Holder; then they had 7 children! This must
mean he was married at least 3 times!
Anyway, if you have anything solid I can use about John Holder,
I would appreciate it very much.
I would be happy to trade data with you at any time.
