Taking a Course Online

For most students, online learning is a positive experience. Since the student chooses the time and place for interaction with the course, taking it online will add more flexibility to your busy schedule. I am here to guide you and promote your success!

Online education is most appropriate for learners who are self-motivated and do not procrastinate (put things off till the last minute). It requires independence and autonomy, the same characteristics you will need when you become a practicing nurse. You must be assertive in using all of the tools available for your learning.

If you feel that you are becoming overwelmed or frustrated, or if you start to feel isolated, please schedule a synchronous chat with me during my online office hours, or e-mail me. We can always schedule a chat time weekly where we can meet online at the same time, or you may schedule a face-to-face meeting with me during my office hours or by appointment in Harlingen.

Tips for Success:

  • Come to class (online) often .
  • Keep track of calendar and due dates.
  • Work ahead (don't wait to move on to the next module).
  • Follow instructions carefully.
  • Know when you should ask questions (and ask!). No question is "dumb"- only not asking!
  • Take advantage of sychronous ('real-time') chat sessions and scheduled office hours.
  • View the video demos if you need visual/audio explanations.
  • Read carefully and refer back to what has been read when doing the assignments.
  • Study in groups with your peers, if possible.
  • Allocate at least as much time in your schedule for this course as you would for the same course given in a totally classroom-based environment (minimum 6 hours per week).

Many resources are available that can help you learn dosage calculations. Your text is designed to be used as a self-instruction tool; it comes with an easy-to-use CD-ROM containing tutorials that take you though many of the lessons step-by-step. There are instructor-made video demos of many of the calculations, located in several of the modules. There is also a computer tutoring program available for student use in the ADN nursing lab, practice tutorials and exams on Meds Publishing, and there are texts available in the bookstore and library that present the material using various methods, e.g. formula method, or ratio/proportion. It's not about the method you use, it's about being able to calculate quickly and confidently to get the correct dose!
