Course Description and Learning Outcomes

COURSE DESCRIPTION : (WECM):

Dosage calculations include reading, interpreting, and solving calculation problems encountered in the preparation of medications; and conversion of measurements within the apothecary, advoirdupois, and metric system. Lab 3, Cr 1.

KEY CONCEPTS AND COURSE PLAN:

This Level 1 simulated laboratory course provides a foundation for acquiring knowledge related to the basic nursing skill of accurately calculating dosages of pharmacological agents to be administered. This skill includes the accurate use of basic mathematics to calculate drug dosages, including the use of fractions, decimals, percents, dimensional analysis, and solving simple equations. It emphasizes the various systems and units of measurement and how to convert from one to the other. The terminology and abbreviations to accurately interpret orders and medication labels are also emphasized. This skill also includes the knowledge of how to accurately use medication administration equipment as related to the dosage to be given. Formulas to accurately calculate dosages to be given for various routes of administration are also emphasized. It provides opportunities for practicing and demonstrating safe implementation of these skills in a virtual laboratory setting, and by exam validation, in accordance with legal standards.

PRE-REQUISITES:

BIOL 2301, BIOL 2101, MATH 1332, BIOL 2302, BIOL 2102, PSYC 2301

CO-REQUISITES:

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: (WECM):

The student will solve problems using a critical thinking approach and convert between the metric, apothecary, and avoirdupois systems.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this course the student will have had the opportunity to meet the following course learning outcomes:

Provider of Care

  1. Identify how basic human needs of the client are affected by accurate administration of medications.
  2. Using simulated situations, demonstrate the use of mathematical principles to calculate dosages of medications that will provide individualized care.
  3. Examine the use of critical thinking to plan and implement client care as related to accurate medication administration.
  4. Using simulated situations, demonstrate nursing skills relating to accurately calculating dosages of medications to be administered.
  5. Describe standards of nursing practice that govern safe administration of medications.
  6. Describe the basic functions and roles of the nurse in administering medications to clients.

Coordinator of Care

  1. Describe the role of the nurse in the collaboration with other health care team members in the provision of safe medication administration.

Member of a Profession

  1. Using case studies and virtual simulated laboratory experiences, demonstrate accountability for own actions in the care of the client by demonstrating safe and accurate performance of nursing skills related to calculation and documentation of medication dosages.
