Gluing the spacers

  • Glued first spacer to the deck with Epoxy thickened with Cab-O-Sil
  • Glued second spacer onto the first
  • Clamps at the side were used to overlay the second spacer directly over the first.

After gluing the Spacers

  • I glued them separately in order to avoid the staircase effect you would get if you glued the spacers an rim in a single operation.

Gluing on the rim

  • Again I used clamps on the sides to precisely overlay the rim onto the spacers.

The coaming is completed

  • At this point, the cutout in the deck is trimmed to fit the coaming.

A last look before finishing begins.

  • It is looking more like a real kayak now.

Filling the glass cloth with epoxy

  • Two coats of epoxy are applied and then the excess cloth is cut off.

It's beginning to look like a kayak

  • I found  the knee braces in the coaming confining, and cut them off with a saber saw.
  • I like to sit away from the rear bulkhead, and the knee braces didn't allow that.

Another helper

  • A visitor that Benny and Curry didn't see.

Preliminary outfitting the cockpit

  • Before finishing I made temporary outfitting to check the fit.
  • The coaming knee braces have been removed.
  • I  made a minicell foam knee brace like I have done in my other kayak.
  • A backband is fastened to the coaming spacers so it contacts the small of my back.

Checking out the appearance

  • Taping on some tie downs and deck lines allows me to see what the final outcome will appear like.
  • The rear VCP hatch on top of the deck is not as obtrusive as I thought it would be.
