6 Installing The Rear Deck

Checking deck layout with cardboard

  • This was a good time to see how it would be to sit in the boat.
  • Cardboard is used for the deck and the coaming is taped in position.
  • It's going to be a tight fit for me.

Shaping the sheer clamps

  • The sheer clamps are planed to match the contour of the deck.

Hull prior to installing the deck

  • A last look at the hull before the deck is installed.

Modifying the main reinforcing stringer

  • Two more stringers are added to reinforce the area behind the rear bulkhead.
  • I will sit on the rear deck when entering and exiting the cockpit.
  • The stringer in the hatch area is offset.
  • Stops are installed to hold foam partitions, allowing a variable hatch volume.

Glassing the cockpit floor

  • The cockpit floor is covered with 4 oz. fiberglass cloth.

Gluing on the rear deck

  • The underside of the rear deck is coated with unthickened epoxy.
  • Epoxy thickened with Cab-O-Sil is spread on the sheer clamps, and deckbeams.
  • The deck panel is nailed to the sheer clamps with 3/4 in bronze ring nails.
  • The nail locations are all pre marked using a gage block.
  • Weights are distributed to hold the the deck down while the glue is drying.
