5 Glassing The Hull

The hull after sanding

  • A 5 in orbital sander with 100 grit paper is used to sand the hull smooth.

Applying 4oz. fiberglass cloth

  • One piece of 4 oz. fiberglass cloth covers the entire hull.
  • The cloth is pulled to conform with the surface.
  • The cloth folds at the bow and stern were able to be pulled straight.
  • Excess material is trimmed off leaving a 2 in overhang.

Applying unthickened epoxy

  • A 6 in foam roller is used to spread the epoxy.
  • The cloth is saturated starting at the middle and working toward each end.

Epoxy applied and cloth trimmed

  • Two coats of epoxy are used to saturate the cloth.
  • The second coat was applied after the first coat was just about dry.
  • Epoxy was applied as the temperature was dropping to minimize the formation of bubbles.
