Bendix Environmental Research, Inc.(BERI), founded in 1980, specializes in toxicology, hazardous materials management, and preparation of environmental documents, or appropriate parts of environmental documents dealing with hazardous materials. BERI provides expert witness services and litigation research and support for toxic tort cases, including workplace and environmental exposures and chemical cancer causation. BERI has extensive experience preparing environmental review documents as required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and has provided expert witness court testimony and depositions on the adequacy of health risk and safety assessments in environmental documents. Representative projects have included: an EIR for a housing project on a heavily polluted former industrial site; a Negative Declaration for the addition of an MTBE (gasoline additive) manufacturing plant at an oil refinery. The President of BERI, Dr. Selina Bendix, has served on federal, state, and local toxic substances and occupational health advisory commities. She has testified in court, before standard-setting panels, and at Workers Compensation hearings on environmental and health effects of chemicals. The Vice President of BERI, Gilbert G. Bendix, has served for ten years as Superintendant of Engineering and Water Supply of the San Francisco Fire Department and for six years as manager of the Suburban Operations Division of the San Francisco Water Department.
