Play Magic on the cheap!

Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956)

OK. Let me take a break from my mild ranting to talk about things that are cool. Or, perhaps just mockworthy, so cool for a very different reason. Ah, fuck it. Let's just go full on with the laughing at weird Christian ideologies!

(I realize that last one might be self-mocking)

In the meantime, I can get to things that are actually awesome, and share them with you. The relative weirdness of the links notwithstanding, I figure they will speak for themselves of the brilliance they bring to your life.

In the meantime! I have made beer, and it is good. I have been reading books: they are good. First: The Shadow of the Wind (I'm too lazy to do all the linking right now. Everyone knows where Amazon is) by Carlos R Zufon, and I say: check it out. A well written tale with a sparkle of magical realism in it. Second: The Ghost Brigades, by John Scalzi. Man, it's fun sci fi. I've been wanting to read some of Scalzi's fiction since The Captain got into his web site years ago, and I finally got a book from the library. Recommended.

Currently, I'm keeping an eye on Threepanelsoul for comicy goodness.

I've seen a ton of movies lately. (Again, link lazy kicks in. Ya'll know where imdb.com is.)
The Host; a really good movie that uses a mutated octo-monster to deal with a family drama. Well done, and uses more slime and 'boo' moments than actually frightening.

300; oh the macho. See it with your sense of humor. And a beer.

Hot Fuzz; the movie has an uneven tone throughout but makes that work for it, when the climax of the movie shows up. I don't want to get into it, for fear of ruining it for someone who hasn't seen it, but I do think it's a well done film with more funny then action moments, and certainly worth my time and money.

Grindhouse; I enjoyed this project a lot. I disagree with the people who think Tarrentino's film is weaker--but I do think that it should've been the first movie, instead of the second. It plays to the scary film genre well, and as a result is a movie that isn't as fun as Rodriguez's. RR's film is just more fun (by its nature) and I think sending people off on a high note would've given them a better feeling for the movie overall.

Goddamnit. I'm exhausted. And I tried to upload shit last week, and the internet went down. How am I to blame for being tardy, now? Some links will be NSFW. Eh.

Ah, the future. We are here, and it still doesn't fucking work.

Holy crap. I just found an archive of linky in my email folder. This should be the weirdest update ever.
Or the lamest. That might also happen. Things happen. I post. Really. OK. The truth is I just drink wine and hope for the best.
And sometimes I just see things and go; holy fuck. Plus, lesbian mythbusters.

I'm pretty sure humanity should be destroyed.

Recently, I saw The Holiday. Which I wanted to like, because Kate Winslet is awesome. But. It did suck. Oh did it suck so. Not funny enough. Not human enough. Not inhuman enough. Romances that encourage 'the big moment' without enough attention to the little ones that make the big one possible bug the fuck out of me.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not opposed to the sweeping gesture. But I'm very opposed to the sweeping gesture that has no setup, and makes people think that all you need is the sweeping gesture and all is well. Sigh. There was a good movie there, and it got beaten.

Anyway. This linky is cool.

I've been reading John Scalzi's Ghost Brigades. It's pretty damn good. I want to read more of his shit. It's a fun, solid sci-fi adventure that knows it's roots really well. Just good stuff.

Played way too goddamn much Guitar Hero with The Captain. Good times, but holy shit my hands hurt. Still, we got to do the guy thing for a few days, and that's always good.

What else. Damned if I know. I don't have the energy to rant. I'm exhausted from being around children and driving and drinking (not at the same time, duh) and getting my nose broken. Or nearly broken. Go. Do. Be good.

Maybe I should just give up on the idea of doing regular updates here. Monthly! That's what you'll get and you'll like it!
Or something. Damned if I know.

I saw the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, and it was absurd. I mean that in just about every sense of the word. If you want things to make sense, don't see this movie. See it, if at all possible, with someone whose sense of reality is torqued; they'll enjoy it and you'll have a far better time, I assure you. Maybe you're the person with the torqued sense of reality? Cool. Take someone who'd be hesitant otherwise.
Also: beer. I recommend at splitting at least a pitcher of it.

The new Poison The Well is out, and I like it. Not quite as cohesive as their previous album, but that's OK. A solid effort with only a few weak songs, and some directions the band hadn't gone before, with the occasional moody, atmospheric song instead of the usual crushing hardcore.

The new Pelican album is out May 22, and the songs I've been hearing just dominate my aural landscape. I'm going to try and listen to everything else before City of Echoes comes out, because once it's out, why listen to anything else?
/ha!

Some of you may've heard that there's another planet out there like Earth! Or if not, you have now. Pretty cool.

I'm playing God of War 2 and Final Fantasy 12, and they're both excellent. In one respect, I'd rather be playing those games than writing right now, because I want to get through these things...clear my schedule, if you will. On the flipside; the great thing about videogames is that they can fucking wait. I know that writing for this web site (it's not exactly blogging, is it?) is not exactly writing, but it is practicing of some kind.

Quickly, though: GoW2 is hyper violent awesomeness, with a pleasantly scaled difficulty, excellent graphics, a superb control scheme, and a sense of story that is as well put together as it is over the top.

Final Fantasy 12 has, in many ways, revamped much of the series with a very interesting new direction. The gameplay is a little more detail oriented--you set up a series of actions, and then the characters execute them, so your involvement in the fighting is almost once-removed--but things keep going at a fast enough pace that I'm not bored yet, and there's a solid system in place for the levelgrinding that you have to do in every RPG. This is nice, because instead of feeling like I'm just levelgrinding, there's actually a small goal involved to work toward, beyond just getting my character to level up. The story is solid as well, so...it's all good.

My favorite highlight from Alodie's birthday party:

Oh really? Ya really Uh-huh

You shoulda been there. Wooo.

2/19
Holy crap.
OK, so let's get started.

First: Okami. It's a fantastic game, with a great sense of humor. The visual style is superb, and you won't see anything quite like it's old school Japanese plus cel-shading imagry anytime soon. In addition to keep the game relatively tight; the sidequests are ones that can be solved, more or less, on your way to the next destination (or while at one destination). If you've got the time and inclination, check it out, for it's a great experience.

I've started making my 2006 music tape. It's taken me long enough, I know, but it's not easy to make time for shit. It'll be done soon, though, and then I can clear away some old music in time for...2007? Nevermind.

One of the things I like to do is send the educational links everyone's way, when I find them. Of course, what I find interesting is probably of virtually no use to anyone. Still.

One thing I've been reading currently is DMZ, which has been exceptional. If you like comic books, or even speculative fiction, I think it's worth giving a read.

I've finally gotten a new printer! But I've been unable to get the wireless thing working. Grrr. Fortunately, I know people who have tech knowledge. We'll see what happens. Maybe I have to do something weird to get it to all work out.

It seems like a lot has gone on, yet as we all know, pleasures are transient. Casino Royal, Volver; good movies. The Great War for Civilization: so far a great book. It seems like there should be more to talk about and link to, but for now this is what I've got. And I want to get some new words posted. So fuck it.

12/13
So. Thanks to everyone who sent me filth to share!

First, let's start out with: I love where I live. Sometimes, I even like being on this planet, but for the most part, I center my love to Portland. It's a pretty sweet place, and not very likely to be overrun by zombies anytime in the near future. And, of course, as I often say: fuck vampires. Just 'cause.

This is NSFW, and really, just fucking wrong. (also NSFW terminology)
And this video, for the 3 people who haven't seen it.

What else. I'm really just going through 4 months of email and dusting off

Then there's the occasional odd item. I'm not saying that these things can't be worthwhile...or even outright cool.

Then there's the bemusing web site...so many NSFW links today! The toys I can never leave behind.

I saw Eric Bachmann on 12/11. The first surprise came with the opening song, Chumming The Ocean, one of my favorite Archers of Loaf songs, and one I never expected to hear live, ever. I pretty much began to trance out right there.

Then, nearly 2 hours later, it was over. I'd heard songs I really wanted to hear, especially Lonesome Warrior, and things seemed...well, OK. Good music for when you're depressed. Bad music for when you're drinking and depressed.

Went with Mr Forehead to see the Blood Brothers and ...Trail of Dead. The Blood Brothers were great. But then 40+ minutes passed, and ToD hadn't come on, and Mr Forehead is feeling ill, and I'm just bored...
So we left. Fortunately, luck was upon on, and we'd gotten in for free!
However. $6.00 for '20'oz of beer? Um. Fuck that. I don't believe those glasses are 20oz, and even if they are, you're charging me two bucks more for 4 ounces of beer.
Shitty beer too, since it's McMinnimans.

I guess that's it for now. My inbox is 80 messages smaller, and I'm thankful.

Heh.

"The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question: 'Is this real, or is this just a ride?' And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, 'Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because this is just a ride.' And we kill those people." -- Bill Hicks
