The Rumor is an interactive video for the CD-ROM format. The video centers on four individuals, two male and two female, who went to high school together several years ago and are now attending their high school reunion. As high school students, their paths crossed at two different moments involving the same rumor of sexual promiscuity, about one of the characters, Lana. One event was a party that all four attended in which Lana and one of the other characters, Michael, disappeared into the bathroom together. Then, a week later, the second event occurred when Lana and Michael ran into each other on the street and had a physical fight over rumors Michael was spreading about the time he spent in the bathroom with Lana.

After viewing an introductory scene showing the actual reunion, users can select a character and learn more about them, read his/her diary, watch a video showing his/her current lifestyle, and see video representations of that character's memories of the two key events which connect the four individuals. After learning about as many or as few of the characters as the user desires, (s)he can exit the program, access the video clips used, and create their own version of the story, as they see it. The idea is for the user to then share their version in the media literacy classroom, or on the Web site for the project, with others who have also used the CD.
